I'd recommend starting with your local RSPCA or animal Welfare Charity Dog's Shelter. They often have pedigree dogs who are unwanted and need a new owner to dote on them. Next I would try West Highland White Rescue. Each bread has its own rescue charity and they can put you in touch with dogs in your area who need a home.

Don't, whatever you do, contact a puppy farm or similar. If you really do want a puppy, get one from a reputable breeder and make sure you see the parents. In fact, rescue homes often have puppies as well, so go there first. These terriers are a fantastic breed but need to be raised correctly and controlled properly.

In answer to the other question, yes Cairns are similar but they tend to be a little bit feistier than their Westie counterparts and will take a lot of looking after.

Good luck, and remember to check with your mum it's what she really wants before going ahead, it might just upset her more.

You will find they are quite hard to get, and very expensive!! Why not get her a small rescue dog? That would do everyone a favour, especially the dog. They will be very happy looking after each other I'm sure. Westies are one of the breeds that are quite rare, they have small litters so it makes them a difficult dog to breed. Good luck
