No, you can get it repaired at the shop of your choice. Some insurance companies have guaranteed repair shops though, and that means that they guarantee the work as long as you own the car. There are other shop programs that provide a good customer service element, but ultimately it is up to you where you get it fixed. They cannot make you go to any shop. You just need to get the car to the adjuster for the estimate at the very least, then put it in the shop.

You can have your vehicle repaired anywhere you want BUT....
If the insurance co has contracted rates with certain body shops and they can get your vehicle repaired for a certain amount and your shop of choice wants more, you will be responsible for the difference as they can show that they can have the work done for less.
The only upside to using the Insurance co shops is if the shop does not do the repairs right, you can go back to the insurance co and complain.

By law you can choose any body shop you choose.
If you decide to take the vehicle to one that the insurance company recommends you may have additional perks such as a lifetime or extended warranty on any parts repaired by the body shop, etc.
---
Be sure to ask your body shop if they can match the same warranties on repairs as the one the insurance company recommends. Also, be weary of your body shop not being able to have repairs done in a timely fashion as you may only have a certain amount of approval time in a rental vehicle provided by the insurance company.

You can have your vehicle repaired at ANY body shop you choose. Read your policy carefully, though, as some companies save you premium dollars by having direct repair programs with shops that utilize discounts and aftermarket parts. It is possible you could pay some extra by using another shop.

As a general rule, you don't have to take the lowest bid, and you don't have to take it to any particular shop. A suggestion is just that, a suggestion. Since the accident was not your fault, and the other person must make you whole as a result, negotiate with the insurance until you are made whole.

It depends on whether your car is still under warranty. If the car is still under warranty, you may be required to return to the dealership. In any event, read your insurance policy and your owner's manual to find out whether there are any restrictions on the body shop you can use.

You can go anywhere you like, but the insurance company will not pay more than their apprasial. If it costs more where you want to go, you'll have to pay the difference.
