I feel that the logical thing to do first is talk to your child. Spanking them all the time will only make their behavior worse. I have decided to take a new approach to spanking. Talk first and then if that doesnt work, then spank. I use a paddle like in school or a belt. Spank them in the same place not all over. That is at least what I do. You know your limits! Good luck.

I feel sorry for you. Why do you even feel such brutality is necessary? Is that all you know? Is that how you were raised? If so, are you happy now? Is this what you want for your children?
It sounds as though the ritualized violence (that is what's achieved when punishment is prescribed) isn't very effective in relating to your children, so why not try something else? Talk about "catching them off guard" (your words): Imagine how they'll react if you're really kind and gentle with them. I bet you'll get a good response; I bet you'll find that approach more agreeable to everyone.

Sarcasm - my favorite.
I hope I am interpreting your question correctly as I am also anti-spanking. I see many people who are very inconsistant with discipline and then spank quite forcefully when they get frustrated. This just justifies random violence in the child's mind.
Then there are those that say that calm, controlled spankings are the way to go. Again, I don't see the reason for that because if you can do that then you can find a more appropriate punisment than spanking.

It is a real same that how many times a day you should spank is your only concern. How about why are your kids acting out and why you cant reinforce good behavior so that you don't have to spank at all!!

with a spanking, are you teaching your children not to do something because it's wrong, or are you teaching them to not do it because they will be spanked??
I grew up in an iron fisted home...I was scared 99% of the time... never got along with dad & still don't. I didn't avoid doing the wrong thing because it was wrong- I avoided them because I didn't want the tar beat out of me for doing it. That is not condusive to rasing a child who will go out into the world & be a good citizen.
Secondly, and this is my own pet-peeve... when a child hits & you spank or smack them, what are you teaching them?!?!
"oh, you hit johnny...*WACK* DON'T HIT" yeah...that's smart. you just SHOWED them that hitting was okay.
Children learn what they live... they are living & learning fear, disrespect, violance, and ignorance in you home & under your care.

Of course you won't really spank your child everyday, but time-out and restriction do not always work either. In answer to your question, it would depend on age of the child and seriousness of the wrong doing. And to all you "Never spank a child" people, you are the cause of all the gangs and school shooters we have in the world today. Go spank yourselves now!

I rarely spank. But if I was forced to when they were little, I would much rather throw a half cup of water on them if they were having a tantrum. Doesn't hurt and is a nuisance to clean up ... for me. They tend to quieten down a bit. Don't know if it is an acceptable method.

Hey you don't need to spank every now and then. That's a sure recipe for damaging your child's self-confidence and self-esteem. It's better to try reward and incentive methods to get your kids ruly.
I agree with the thing Spare the Rod and Spoil the Child, but yor're carrying it too far. Unless the mischief is too dangerous, there's no need to lay a hand on the kids.

..You really got them going now..I know your just kidding trying to get a rise out of these people..and its working..The people of today don't really spank their children,,but if its necessary at times to spank a child..my sons 13 now so we handle it differently now..I remember as a child and most people my age also remember that if you did something wrong your butt was in trouble,,you had a spanking coming,,back then if the neighbors seen you do something and they told your parents your parents would believe them and spank you for what every it was. so i always thought twice before i did something wrong,,
that's the problem with kids now days,,they don't fear the punishment they just laugh at their parents..and do as they please..
