Why is a 5 yr old in first grade? First graders are usually 6 or 7 yrs old.
When you say "pay attention to the books" do you mean reading books to him or do you mean doing his homework?
If you mean listening to you read stories, does he pick out the books you read? Have you ever taken him to the library to pick out books he would like?
Don't bribe him. He should listen to stories because he wants to and enjoys it, not because he is being bribed.
Maybe he is tired of sitting still all day in school? Do you make sure he gets some exercise after school?

Well try and find a book of a topic he's interested in, like for example if he's seen a film for example Chicken Little, then you can find the book of the film and maybe he will be interested in reading that, hope I can help!

Set aside a time to sit down and read with your first grader. I had the same problem with my son at that age.

ok wow a first grader well just wait just a bit longer or you can just maybe let him read thats what he might want just give him the book and let him read it if that wont work you should go to a book store and ask for a audio book he might like to listen to those because i do

Not every kid enjoys books. My 5 year old absolutely adores reading books and being creative. I have taught her to be this way when she was little. I think you have to force the issue as it is in his best interests!

Sit down and read to him. Make it fun. Do silly voices. Talk about the pictures.
Take him to the library during story hour.
Let him see you reading. If you show him that you love books - he'll love books.

Have you tried actually sitting down with them and showing YOUR interest in them and the book? Kids learn by watching and imitating adults not by what you say.

if you have older kids, maybe they can help him. My 6 year old (1st grader) loves to sit down and read, he actually teaches his younger brothers. I try to make it fun istead of putting lots of demands on him. Telling him that he will need to be able to read in order to be that truck driver he wants to be.

go to the library and have him choose a couple and read them there. not only are they free, but if he dont like one he can choose another very easily. dont force him to read the hard ones, if he likes the baby books that are real simple go with the flo.
