I read these responses on here and I am reminded, "But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God: because they are foolishness to him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." (I Cor. 2:14)
"...the Spirit of Truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him, neither knows Him..." (John 14:17)
As for the question about what is the benefit, in I Cor.14:2 Paul says, "he that speaks in a tongue is not speaking to men, but unto God: because no man understands (what he is saying); however, in the spirit he is speaking mysteries."
The gift of speaking with other tongues is referred to as a "perfect prayer" because it does not rely upon one's carnal mind - it is a prayer directly from one's own spirit (as directed by the indwelling Holy Spirit) to God Himself. We don't know with our minds how to pray perfectly according to the will of God (Romans 8:26) but the Spirit of God living in us does. That's why in Acts 2:4 it says that "they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and (they) began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance (something to say)."
Notice "they" were speaking in tongues, as the Spirit of God gave them something to say. You should also notice that they were not in public when this first manifestation took place. They were sitting in a house, according to verse 2. They went out in public afterward and spoke in the languages that other men could comprehend. This was a "one time deal" as it was meant to be a public service announcement to the world that the Holy Spirit had been restored in full to mankind. It was immediately after this public spectacle that Peter addressed the multitude of people and 3000 people accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior.
This confusion is often made, between this one time occurence, and the regular manifestation of speaking in other tongues for the purpose of self-edification. I Cor.14:4 says, "He that speaks in a tongue edifies himself..." That is to say, speaking in tongues is a means by which a believer can receive spiritual fortification - it is a means of fellowshipping with God in the Spirit.

So those who was filled with the Holy Spirit started speaking in known languages? Who was there to interpet what they said? How do you know they didnt curse God? What language did they all speak in? If you would look up the word tongues in the greek you will find its a language. Here is the meaning of tongues which is used most throughout Acts and Corinthians.
1) the tongue, a member of the body, an organ of speech
2) a tongue
a) the language or dialect used by a particular people distinct from that of other nations
Now here is the other meaning of tongues which is used in Corinthians 14:21
1) one who speaks a foreign language

God has never stopped pouring out His Spirit. In the end times God will pour out His Spirit on all flesh. Along with His Spirit comes truth, and when that comes into any situation the situation must change to truth. I have seen many instances of that in my life. We are living in the Holy Spirit administration now, and God is looking to fill all with the Holy Spirit. It ain't about religion, or the name on your church building. It is about the name that is written in the Lamb's "Book of Life". God is not a respecter of persons, He loves us all equally and wants to give us all that is available to us as our inheritance. No we don't deserve it it is by Grace alone that we are saved. Not somebodies idea of the way, but God's Way. "I am the way the truth and the life and nobody comes to the Father but by ME." The Me is the Christ, not the Baptist church ot the Catholic or the Pentecostal. Not a religious demand but a reality demand, if you want to be fully human, and to operate with ALL that is available. Amen
By the way, Praise God! for the eight souls that were saved and filled with the Holy Ghost, but I am sure there were many more on the Planet yesterday and praise God for them too.

The bible clearly states that the gift of speaking in tongues would cease, so tell me, who is it talking through their mouths then? You can't say the holy spirit, coz that gift was stopped and is no longer possible (If you believe the Bible you can't just conveniently ignore the bits that you don't like, and obey the bits that apply to you). This is a clear case of the devil transforming himself into and angel of light and misleading you, it is Demons that cause people to speak in tongues

May I ask who the people who are speaking in tongues benefit. Jesus' disciples were given the gift of speaking in tongues to communicate with other people with different languages. These days when one speaks in tongues, can't any one understand them, so what does it benefit? I think that gift along with the power to raise the dead died when the apostle did.

They were illegals and talking Spanish. Not tongues. They were saying "Leave us alone".
Only people who believe in fantasies believe such tales.

Wow, you dunked 'em in water and they came out babbling?
You might wanna check your pool's filter and chlorine levels. Something sounds a bit out of balance there. You might have some hallucinogenic or neurotoxic algae in there. If the water's red, you've got red tide, a classic neurotoxic algae. Get the people to a hospital pronto.
Otherwise, isn't the power of self-hypnosis grand?

I know that hysterical people with emotional difficulties given the right setting will believe and do anything, incuding babbling and gagging and calling it angelic language because it's what's expected of them, they've been told in advance it will happen if they are really saved, so they are highly motivated to make it happen, whether they consciously fake it or not.
