i have 5 4 and a half week old handreared puppies one of them was breathing really shallow when we fetched them from the vets ,my partner put her on an hot water bottle and rubbed and rubbed her to get her serculation going and she is as big as the others now so try rubbing to keep her going and feed her smaller feeds more often than the others like say 2.5ml every hour instead of 5 ml every two hours or depending on the milk you are using plus make sure they are warm with a heat lamp or pad,if the puppy wont suckle try a different teat as mine didnt like the small teats,or try a syringe dropping little bits at a time, hope they are ok but keep at it xxx

You don't say whether the Dam has rejected the pups. If she has you may have an uphill struggle, but you need to be their mother and defecate and deurinate them manually. Cotton wool balls with baby oil wiped on the anus usually does the trick. They won't feed properly otherwise.
If Dam is OK with them, make sure the pups are all suckling as if they aren't they may have a cleft palate or some other disorder. Presumably your vet has checked this though. If pups are quiet they have got enough food usually. You must make sure everything used to feed them is sterile. And also make sure they are warm, but not overheated. No draughts, even temperature in the room, and a quiet environment - no people or dogs around till they are fit and well and started weaning. You may also have to start weaning earlier thanusual, possible at two weeks - use puppy porridge (Masterfoods) to start with then graduate to tinned puppy food mashed with a fork. And cotrary to what someone else said DO NOT GIVE BABY PUPPIES TITBITS!!!! They have no teeth to chew them. Stupid dope!
Good luck.

There could be many reasons why the puppies have stopped nursing.
Most likely, they could have an immuno-deficiency problem. It would explain why they don't have an appetite. If that is the case, you need to continue feeding them by hand.
Do they have access to the mother's milk? The best and easiest way is the natural way. Try offering them to the mother, yet still hand-feeding them at the same time.
If they aren't eating the milk that you are giving them, maybe it is too hot or too cold.
If you have to resort to force-feeding them, you can use a small syringe. Just squirt, slowly, the food into thier mouths.
Did your veterinarian have any suggestions as to why they wern't nursing?
Good Luck.

So book the vet for a home visit?
The ***** may have an infection which is stopping her producing milk. The pups may have cleft palates which means they cannot suck. Without a doubt, they need to be seen by a vet and as an experienced breeder I'm afraid I simply don't believe that your vet would say not to bring a sick litter in or offer to do a home visit when he knows puppies are dying. If this is indeed the case, please supply the name of the vet to me and I will report him to the RCVS and get him reprimanded or struck off!!

The other pups who are bigger than them are keeping them from eating, we had the same problem, the little one's are not strong enough to force their way to a nipple. The only thing to do is to give the little one's their own feeding time with mom. If you don't the other one's will pass away as well. That's what we had to do with ours to keep the little one's from dying. In a few weeks they little ones will be big enough to eat on their own but for now your going to have to help them a bit if you want them to survive. We had to give a few of our puppies C.P.R. thats when we realized what was going on and started feeding them at different times than the bigger puppies. Good Luck Hope I helped.

domestic canines would desire to stay with their mom and littermates till they seem to be a minimum of 8 weeks previous; in some states it extremely is against the regulation to split the kinfolk till now that age. domestic canines are generally weaned during the 5th week, yet that does no longer mean their mom is rejecting them. She and the different littermates spend the subsequent month coaching the domestic canines a thank you to be canines and stay in a %.. They study hierarchy and manners, and, maximum critically, they discover ways to inhibit their bites. Take the domestic canines back and tell your SIL that the momma canines nevertheless has a lot to coach those doggies. you could and would pass to the domestic canines generally... yet i'd advise that taking 2 isn't a sturdy theory while you at the instant are not an experienced canines proprietor. 2 domestic canines are much better than two times as a lot artwork, and that they are harder to coach by using fact they bond extra strongly to one yet another than to you.

They need to nurse... It is important that they get the colostrum from the mother's milk. If necessary, hand -express the milk so that there are a few drops on Mom's nipple (pups' sense of smell is better than their sight at that age). Place the pup on the nipple. It is imperative that they learn to suck. You can also mix a small amount of Karo syrup in warm water and feed to pup through a needle-less syringe.

Good vet. Too many diseases and other bacteria out there you did the right thing.
Mommas milk is better for them than store bought. You really should force mom to feed.
Another thing we have done if we get newborns dumped in sacks on the side of the road is find another nursing dog.

The bigger pups can be a big influence on the eating habits of the smaller runty type pups. They bully their way to the teats at the front which have the best milk. Drag them off and put them nearer the back. Hold the smaller ones on and encourage them to feed. Failing that, you will have to try giving them formula.
