I WANT ONE.

I live in the mountains, where it is always snowing, October to April and some of the curves are treacherous. I commute to the world below where it doesn't necessarily snow. I also spend a lot of time on muddy construction sites. I have done some research on jeeps and I need to do more.

I would love to hear stories from guys and gals about their jeep pros and cons, and if you think one particular model or year is better then another. Ragtops vs. hardtops, 4 cyl vs 6 cyl. CD player vs. cassettes? Any mechanical problems? I will appreciate all of your comments. Thanks

I live in Boise, ID where we have a true four seasons. In summer it's a 100+, in winter 0-. The only drawback to the Wrangler in your situation is the short wheelbase and slick mountain roads. If you get one, get a newer model year. The four wheel drive system has gotten more advanced and reliable over the years. The short wheelbase causes the rear end to slide a lot when it's slick. Mechanically speaking, there are no major common issues, just be sure to have a qualified Jeep tech look at it before you buy. I run my soft top year round, so it's a little chilly in the winter, but I have a good heater. Definitely go with the inline six cylinder. It is very reliable and has plenty of juice to power a Jeep. Get some good traction tires, and take it easy on ice/snow and you'll do fine. Happy Jeeping!

If you want to just drive the truck the things to consider are: it's not comfortable, it bounces alot, the rag tops are loud, the radio isn't, the hard top is ackward to put on and off unless you have three people, all steel construction means all rust invasion, if you don't do at least minor engine maintenance things tend to go south fairly quick, and what cargo room.

If you want to DRIVE your off-road , mud slinging, bump thumping, rock climbing, rooster tailing dust sucker, here are the things you should consider: Top on or off or windshield up or down or doors on or off, has the largest aftermarket supply base than ANY other vehicle in the world, If you break down on the side of the road guarenteed another Wrangler or CJ or MB will stop to help, with patience and time you can swap in ANY engine or transmission or transfer case (or two or three!) or differentials, if you have any mechanical aptitude you can do almost all the repairs and mods yourself, and of course the Jeep Wave.

Older jeeps have a huge following and mods are plentiful. TJ's are more tech heavy and suspension mods are a little pricey. Most jeepers dive into the snow and mud first and consider that it might be too deep after the truck stops.

Truly: It's a Jeep thing. To own one is to understand.

Well I think the Jeep is a cool car, but if your looking a real offroad stuff then the Land Rover is the king. Jeep have always been a close second and cooler, but Land Rover have always Patented the good off road technology.

id have to say any jeep you buy is going to be a top notch piece of equipment unless its hasnt been taken care of. i would definitly go with a newer one though cuz they are a lot nicer on the inside and usually have more insalation and what not so its cooler in the summer when you cool it down on the inside and the opposite for when its cold outside. also like jeepster420 said the newer ones do have a better 4 wheel drive system and also like he said id go with the inline 6. those engines literally dont know how to die you can not take care of them and theyll still do its job till it finally will quite like any other motor but this one takes a hell of a lot longer to die. top wise id go with the hard top cuz i have a soft top and ya its nice being able to take off the windows and pullin down the top quick but recently my zipper on the back window broke and jeep replaced it but on warrenty and if i didnt take it that day cuz it was my last warrenty day i would have had to buy like 8-9 hundred dollars in a new top and window and only cuz they said the zippers were dirty so the teeth skipped but ya id go with a hard top its a lot nicer. hope this helps a bit.

I have a brand new 1976 cj-7, I say brand new because everything in it is new except for the hood and steering wheel. it is a 304 v8 and I love it. It has quadra trac that really works. I made sure of that when I had it apart. I have a soft top and a hard top. I painted it Chili Pepper red.
