Many dads feel that they are losing their "little girl" when she gets married. Is that true or do they just worry too much?

Dads gain a son instead of losing a daughter when the daughter gets married.

Have you ever heard this little saying:

A daughter is a daughter all of her life
A son is a son until he takes a wife

It's just the old sexist view that a father gives his daughter "away" to the husband when she gets married. Keep in mind that women weren't even permitted to vote until this past century, they were (and still are in many parts of the world) viewed as property. I'm sure any loving father would feel the same as any mother whose child (son or daughter) is getting married and starting their own life and family. It's sad to let go of the past and admit that your child is grown up and doesn't depend on you anymore.

Fathers have to realize that in this day and age they "lose" their daughters long before a husband comes along. My father "lost" me when I moved into my own apartment and supported myself off of my own job. That was when he lost control of me.

It's true my father freaked out a little when I got married, but that was 4 years after I was on my own - he was way late waking up to reality.

Nonsense, I have always had a very close bond with my father, and it is a totally different relationship than I have with my b/f, if I had any concerns that I did not feel I could talk about with my b/f at first then I would always go to my dad for an opinion first.

No believe me,your dad is the only man that you are never going to divorce or break up with no matter how many fights you have, and vice versa. They worry yes, but they eventually see that that their fears are needless and that no matter how old she gets their little girl will always be their little girls.

The husband should be her number one man after marriage, so I guess Dad would get a little jiggy about it.

They should. A husband shouldn't have to compete with his father in law...that's just weird

I agree with miaRules. They are no longer the "man" she runs to when in trouble, or atleast that's how the father feels.
