Why do people insist that Islam is a "peaceful" religion?

I don't know if a day has gone by when there isn't some terrorist act by Muslims somewhere in the world, but especially in the Middle East. They seem to love to blow themselves up and take innocent bystanders. Is life that cheap for Muslims? I know that they think they'll be rewarded in the afterlife by some demonic god (certainly not my God) for their cruelty and hatred, but why do they think their lives on earth are so meaningless as to find it acceptable to torture, behead, and murder people, all in the name of their demonic religion? Of course, terrorists exist in every religion, culture, and country. However, I'll give Muslims credit for one thing: they dominate the category of terrorism. The hypocrisy of their claiming to be "peaceful" is mind-boggling. The tragedy is that ignorant people believe their ugly propaganda.

A few people did not read very carefully what I wrote. Of course, a few extremists of any group do not represent the entire group. But, we aren't witnessing a "few" incidents. DAILY incidences of terrorism are what constitute modern Muslim life.

If a person decides religion is not for him, that person is murdered. Jews are referred to as "apes and pigs" and are to be killed. Come on ! Anyone who finds "peace" with that kind of hatred has a very different definition of peace than sane, intelligent, and educated people.

It's funny how people don't feel comfortable discussing the subject so attempt to divert the subject to something else.

My question involves Islam today. Where are all the atheist terrorists blowing themselves up in restaurants? Open your eyes. It IS the Muslims who are terrorizing the planet. Yes, there are others, but Muslims certainly dominate the terrorist bulletin board in the 21st century.

I have focused more on the answers than on the question in this thread!

The amount of lies some muslims throw up to us are simply absurd!

1) When we talk about terrorism we also mean that EVEN THE MODERATE PART OF ISLAM LIMITS ITSELF AT JUST SAYING THAT "NO THAT'S NOT CORRECT" without any real ACTION aimed at solving YOUR PROBLEM with westerners (from which you keep scrounging freedom, education and many many many other things)
2) The QURAN....each time a non muslim talks about it in negative way immediately 200 muslims come blaming that non muslim for its so called ignorance. But if it is so, how comes in many sections of the Quran we can find sentences like those below?

But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the Pagans [Idolaters or polytheists] wherever ye find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practice regular charity, then open the way for them: for God is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful." (Koran chapter 9, verse 5)

"Fight those who believe not in God nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by God and His Apostle [Muhammad], nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, even if they are of the People of the Book [Jews and Christians], until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued." (Koran chapter 9, verse 29)

So, we should assume that either muslims here are lying to us or that they are the real ignorants. It's very easy to keep saying ISLAM is for tolerance but it's not as easy to prove it with all the things muslims are doing around the world.

3) If terrorims was really a marginal part of ISLAM we wouldn't have:
a) so many terrorists around the world (unless you want to call them warriors for freedom)
b) so many "moderate muslims" overtly or hiddenly endorsing these actions.
c) so many muslim Imams (in Europe in particular, where they can open their mouth with more freedom) that after certain actions claim they were right because Allah clearly states that they have to fight against the infidels

Perhaps muslims are so busy in defending their religion that they missed the key point, which is that if they have to be so busy at defending it there are probably good reasons why people simply DDO NOT WANT THEM AROUND in several countries...I don't think it's just a campaign "against".

4) Muslims show often to be double faced.
When they live in countries where they are kept under control, they pretend to integrate, to adopt all democratic values and resemble to normal citizens but as soon as they have a chance to..they get back to the old habits.
Let's make some examples.
In the US they now feel under target so they behave.
In UK they were integrated, helped and given many chances and their kids blowed themselves into the tube, not to mention the other 10 who were trying to drop a couple of planes.
In Germany Turkish muslims keep aggressing people for religious reasons
In Italy they keep claiming for rights (some of which absurd...like ermoving the catholic cross from classrooms and public building because it's an offense to Allah).

Now, this is ISLAM in the world; these are FACTS, documented and proved; These are actions endorsed by OFFICIALLY RECOGNIZED MUSLIM ORGANIZATIONS and by the muslim community (words coming from the mouth of the imams or the official muslim representatives of muslim communities)

So the question is....When muslims dare answering non muslims do not understand are they sure they have a clear vision of what ISLAM is around the world at the moment?
Are they aware of their imams praying for war in italian mosques?
Are they aware of muslim women claiming they are doing a BELLY WAR, where delivering as many kids as they can in given country is a goal to increasing muslim communities seen as a way to get to political power in the future?
Are they aware of the money the INFIDELS sent to Palestine to ease their pains and which is then spent by Hezbollah for weapons instead of Medicines and Food?
Are they aware that in most muslims countries CHRISTIANS cannot pray their God?
Are they aware that in muslim countries it's impossible to build a catholic church to allow people to pray their God?

I wonder HOW can muslims even dare trying to teach westerners any sort of lesson!

The answer to the question is.
ISLAM COULD CERTAINLY BE A PEACEFUL RELIGION BUT AT THE MOMENT IT IS NOT SURELY THE CASE! ANY MUSLIMG DENYING THIS FACT IS EITHER SPEAKING FOR HIMSELF OR A DECLARATE LIAR!

What's mind boggling is that you believe that the actions of relatively few reflect the beliefs of millions. Islam is, at it's core, a peaceful religion. The propaganda today is that muslims are all terrorists. And that isn't just propaganda, that's racism. You talk about beheadings and cruelty like the inquistion or the crusades never happened. And look at the cruelty of the right wing conservative christians towards gay people. Telling people they are going to hell with aids isn't exactly peacefull, now is it? Also, look at the morman church. Most morman's are not polygamists, and yet all the media can focus on is the few thousand in the excommunicated sect of that church. Allah is, essentially the same as the Christian god. Maybe if you read the koran you would see that.

Political correctness is the problem. people simply can't bring themselves to admit that islam is a violent and barbaric religion. The beheadings, stoning's, throwing acid in womens faces, etc. Speak for themselves. These acts don't just get carried out in a few places by a small group of radicals, they are done everyday in all muslims nations! Yes Christianity has a violent history, and even now the Christian right is a danger to freedom, but not on the same level as islam. Besides pointing out the evil behavior of another group does not justify the actions done by muslims any more than pointing out that you are not a serial killer is going to get you out of a traffic ticket.

Why do Christians insist that Christianity is the "religion of love" when they're really out there spreading hate and killing innocent people as well?

The thing is, there are bad people in the world, in every religion. They are not good followers of their religion, they follow a twisted version of their religion or adjust their religion to their desires instead of adjusting themselves to the rules and message of their religion (=don't follow the religion but say that they do to gain support).

Terrorists are neither good muslims nor do they represent the majority of the muslim population in the world. They are the scumbag minority that you find in every religion.

10 years ago you hardly ever heard of muslim terrorists, did you? At that time it was Christian terrorists (IRA for example) that reached the news all the time. We just go through to phases where one enemy is more active or gets more attention than the other. It doesn't mean that all of the sudden now all muslims in the world are terrorists, just like your dear President being responsible for the killings of thousands of innocent people doesn't make all Christians bad people.

The sad thing is that it's always the bad apples that spoil it for the rest, because people are so damn stupid and label an entire group of people according to the actions of a few.

REAL Islam IS a peaceful religion. Learn about it (from a trusted source, not Fox News, the church or on biased forums) and you'll see. Those terrorists do not follow the real Islam.

I'm not a muslim by the way, I just wanted to try to clear up your misconceptions because I've learned about Islam and seen how normal people practice it.

I have to say I have known some Muslims and they are some of the kindest and most gentlest people I have met. Of course there are some who are not this way.

It just comes down to ideology. I saw soem sort of an interview witha terrorist who described how poverty made he and his fellows cling to the one thing they could get any respect for, martyrdom. So he was part of a terrorist cell. This is just an example how otherwise good people can be mislead and taken in to do horrible things by some people like Bin laden.

Well, you know, Christianity in the Middle Ages was similar in violence. Read the history of the Crusades, particularly the First Crusade. You'd be ashamed. Even The Hundred Years War (1337-1453) saw the English and French butcher each other with the church hovering in the background.

Fortunately, Chrisianity was able to eventually rise above the barbaric years, a point where Islam needs to accomplish.

The religion of Islam is a peaceful religion, however, there are extremists who take it too far. Just like in Christianity, we are a peaceful religion, but some extremists pervert the Bible into meaning what they want it to mean like the KKK. The terrorists have taken there religion and perverted it into feeding their own selfish desire for a religion that fits their own hateful needs.

I very much agree with you, after having survived breast cancer (fingers x'd) I value life so very much and to see this sensless murder in the name of religion is so very sad.
Muslims do have some strange beliefs but I think its the radical extremists who brainwash the minority with beliefs that they will have a bounty of virgins upon martydom......I hope all those virgins bite thier penis off for doing such dreadful things.
