Start buying foods more from health food stores and the organic sections of most grocery stores. Do not waste water, fuel or electricity. Instead of throwing out goods, clothing or furniture, donate them to the Salvation Army or Value Village, give them away to welfare recipients or sell them at a garage sale.
Stay away from products with a lot of packaging. Recycle bottles, cans, liquor bottles, boxes, etc. Buy a lot of basic items from the thrift shops and put old stuff on consignment. You can make money doing this. If you need luggage, check out used stores first. You can save money, too.
Use Murphy's Oil Soap, lye, vinegar, baking soda and ammonia-free Windex for cleaning and stay away from perfumes and bleach in laundry detergent. Never dump anything down the toilet and don't throw out items that can be used for another purpose. Stay away from eating red meat and fatty foods most of the time.
Bike, walk, take the bus or use the subway to go to work or out at night more often. Start a car pool for co-workers and neighbors. You can get them to go along a certain route and charge for gas.
Check Greenpeace's website for ideas on toilet paper, CFC-free products, and biodegradable goods. If you are Canadian, you can learn how to insulate your house to save heating costs and also to reduce electricity. You can also switch to natural gas instead of oil and use ethanol-based gasoline.
