It takes about three days to a week to get over the physical addiction to nicotine (once no longer putting any nicotine into the body at least).
The reason your husband is eating so much is mostly twofold. Cigarettes kill your appetite, so he's probably quite a bit hungrier than he was while smoking. More importantly, smoking is much more of a mental addiction than a physical one, and he is (subconsciously) looking for some activity to fill that void.
Really there is just no telling how long he might eat more than normal. It isn't easy to give up smoking (especially when one still somewhat wants to smoke).

It's just a replacement diversion - he needs to find something else to do - I have given up twice - unfortunately back on the cancer sticks now and each time the munching lasted for about 4 months - I put on loads of weight the first time!!!
The second time I was a bit wiser and went for chewing gum to replace my ciggies. Try getting your husband onto chewing gum, or fruit - when you stop smoking fruit tastes much much better - and he won't pile on too many pounds!
Tell him well done - I hope he keeps with it - I admire his strength!
Good luck x

I gave up nearly two years ago and it was the best thing I've ever done. I would recommend reading 'The Easy Way to Stop Smoking' by Allen Carr. It really helped me deal with the cravings so that I didn't overeat.
Also, he should try to do some exercise. It will help release tension and increasing fitness will show the benefits of giving up the cigs.

I gave up smoking and found eating grapes helped, cos you are using the same hand to mouth action, like you do when you have a cigarette. Chewing gum is helpful but I found I felt hungry afterwards. Tell him to hang in there its worth it in the end Good Luck

I gave up smoking 3 years ago. I didn't use any substitutes. Just don't light another cigarette
Tell him it's all in the mind. Time will pass. it's not easy at all, but it's possible. Patches and stuff don't work for me.

I gave up a few years back. Beware the return of cravings about 6 months after your last cigarette!

my hubby stopped smoking 8 months ago, he ate more, but your body balances out after about 6 months. Don`t worry about it, better than getting cancer, but he will balance out back to normal, tell him to be patient.
