if you want to install xp you dont want to just put it over the other one. unless you are trying to save the data on your hard drive. then you can either do an upgrade on you OS or back up all your info then transfer it to a external hard drive or something.
either way the rigjht way to do it is as follows
stick in the cd- reboot- when youre prompted press any key to boot from cd- let the computer do its thing- it will come to a part that asks if you want to install or repair-click install- then just follow the prompts- you will get to a part that asks if you want to delete the current partition go ahead and delete it- it will ask you if you are sure you want to do that a couple of times-once it is deleted you will have to create a new partition for the size choose the maximum- format with ntfs- and choose the regular format not the quick-
the computer will format the drive then reboot. once it reboots it will begin setting up the OS-you will be prompted for date and time info, keyboard layout info and some basic questions.
and that should do it.
good luck

dont put it on over.. there should be a disk that comes with your computer to program it. on your other computer remove whatever version that you have and then put the xp on. it worked for me.. that should do it but if it doesn't then take the disc that came with your older computer and reset it to factory settings then try putting the xp on it.

Try to find a computer literate (or even a literate) friend, relative or teenager to do it for you.
