I completely agree. I've sold a few things recently and I left feedback the second the buyer paid. I think they do that to make sure you're gonna give them a good rating before they give you one. I HATE it when they do that so I chose to be one of the good sellers.
fair enough

There are a few things that people who do not run eBay Shops may not be aware of so I would like to clear these up (and yes I am an eBay Shop Owner).
When you run your Shop you have an option to allow automatic feedback once feedback has been received from the buyer/seller you have bought from/sold to. It is not always a case of sellers protecting themselves but simply a fact that if they are busy seller they do not have the time to manually leave feedback.
Also, you may not be aware that you are able to reply to feedback even if you have already left feedback yourself. I sometimes receive negative feedback for no genuine reason (other than the buyer is an idiot - sorry, but it's true). You can click reply to feedback so if they say the item arrived damaged and you had already stated in the ad that the item was damaged you can at least let other people know that you were an honest seller and received this feedback without justification.
One final point - whether you are a seller or a buyer, you will always come across the eBay idiot who sees something worth £1,000 in the shops for sale at £5. They buy it and read the ad later which states that the item is a replica or is damaged etc. No matter how you leave your feedback, sooner or later you will come into contact with one of these idiots - so beware!

Yea, I agree with you. I sell sometimes on Ebay, just things of mine and my daughter's and I always give feedback straight away when someone has paid instantly by paypal, or when cheque/p.o cleared. When I buy stuff I find it is those as you say, the Ebay shops that are the worst. Especially those with mega feedback score. Even though I pay by paypal straight after the bidding has ended I still don't get feedback. I often have to email sellers because of this, they just don't bother even if I have left them feedback. Another beef I have is that I win the item and then hear absolutely nothing from the seller, don't know when to expect the goods, they just leave me dangling. I always email my buyers with an invoice straight after the auction and then email them again when I post their goods. Not too much to ask is it? Like you I have stopped giving feedback to sellers altogether if they don't bother communicating or leaving feedback for me.

One thing that no one here seems to realize is that FEEDBACK IS NOT MANDATORY.
The buyer receiving the item is the end of the transaction, not just the payment.
anyone can pay for an item. that does not make for the perfect transaction.
buyers who think they are entitled to positive feedback for merely paying for an item are sorely mistaken.
feedback is the buyers way of letting the seller know that they are happy with the transaction. then the transaction is over.
why should a seller leave feedback before the transaction is complete?
would you walk out of a department store after paying for something and not taking it with you, thinking that the seller is happy with you?
The seller is not going to be happy until you have your merchandise and are walking away satisfied.
remember......FEEDBACK IS VOLUNTARY, NOT MANDITORY
Dont make the mistake that the seller is holding feedback for ransom.
they are most likely waiting to make sure that you are happy with your purchase.

Yes totally fair enough, I hate it when they do that, its just like fishing for compliments in my opinion, I left some really good feedback twice for things I bought and got nothing in return from the seller, now I wait for them to leave me feedback because I think that's the way it should be done.

Inform ebay. Perhaps the can set up a mechanism to remind people to leave feedback. This has been one of my pet peeves as well but it's just an annoyance. I've been both buyer and seller on ebay.
I never leave feedback for anyone until the transaction is completed beginning to end, and either I've received feedback or I've received the product specified..

This is how it SHOULD work.
Buyers and sellers e-mail back and forth as needed.
- Buyer wins bid and sends payment
- Seller accepts payment and verified payment validity
- Seller packs and ships products
- Seller giver positive feedback to BUYER, since Buyer has fulfilled his/her part. If contact was slow, he can indicate that. But by accepting the money, "it's a closed deal".
- Buyer recieves item
- Buyer inspects item to see if the deal rang true
- Buyer posted Positive Feedback as the Seller's end of the bargain worked out great.
In general, Negative Feedback should be used to identify buyers and sellers who have attempted fraud. I see some negative feedbacks used when there was a simply misunderstanding. (Of course, I do not know how).

It's a double edged sword, I used to leave feedback as soon as people paid but have been stung a few times and now wait til the person has received the goods and is happy with them. It's better to trade with 100% feedback and if you leave feedback for customers who know you have 100% feedback they can blackmail you into giving them a refund for "faulty goods" as they say. I sold a very expensive hat and left feedback and it was well packaged, the customer said the hat was a bit bashed and damaged when it arrived and they wanted to pay only half. As I had already left feedback they knew I had no right of reply. I told them to send the hat back and then I would refund their money but they then said it wasn't too bad and would try to fix it themselves in the end they threatened to leave negative feedback if I didn't give them the hat for half price. Once you've been stung yourself you will probably wait until your customers have left feedback and then you know they are happy with their purchase.

I disagree. As a seller you want to know that your item has arrived safely and that the customer has recieved it in good condition and is satisfied. When the buyer leaves feedback this confirms it and the seller can then leave their feedback.
There have been too many instances od sellers leaving feedback first only to get a neg from a buyer, usually trying it on for a claim through paypal. Saying they never recieved etc
This is why most sellers now leave their feedback last.

I sell things on Ebay occasionally and I usually wait until someone leaves feedback for me first for one reason. That is the way I know they have received the item and that everything is ok with it. If I dont hear for a while I email them and ask but it's not worth it to have a dispute and then be stuck with wrong or misleading feedback.
