An E6 (tech sargent in the AIr Force) gets all his normal pay and benefits (which average out to be worth about $38,000 a year) and hazardous duty pay (an extra couple hundred a month) and if he is married, speration pay ( a few hundred for the time he is gone). All money earned in Irag is tax free, regular pay included as well as any re-enlistment bonuses some career fields are eligible for. None of the extra $$ is paid until after you get back. The cost of the deployments for most member is high (especially for men with families) since they will lose any income from part time jobs and spouses at home can have their ability to work impacted as well.

It all depends on your rank, but the army does add hazard pay to your salary when in combat.
