We have recently moved to a new area and my cat is happily getting used to his new garden, but we have one problem. When he is outside he is nice and happy unless I try and go up to him. If i do this he freaks out, hisses at me and trys to run away. Once I have finally persuaded him to come indoors, he goes back to normal, and will happily come up to me and have a fuss.

He wasnt like this at our other house and my other cat is also fine.
Any ideas? At the moment I am trying to tempt him to come to me with tid bits of food but even these dont seem to work. Its as if he doesnt associate me as being me when we are outside. Very strange!

My cat has been done, he was also kept in for 3 weeks before being let outside. We have now lived in the house for 6 weeks and I have been letting him out gradually.

Also by saying that i shouldnt let him out at all isnt really answering my question! I live in the countryside on a quiet lane next to fields so he is quite safe! They also do not go out at night and are only allowed out during the day (daylight hours). I get them in when it is dark. By keeping your cat locked up, you are depriving it of one of the things that cats thrive on - adventure! No amount of cat toys and scratch posts can make up for not being able to climb trees and chase mice!

Hes got different scents to explore and Ur getting in the way. You might find that there is either a top tom cat and hes out defending his part or.. hes got the smell of a female.
Every thing INSIDE smells the same so hes OK...
Hes getting into it
Is the other cat a female or male? females wont get on like this and if its another male then he sees the nutty one as the dominate one and is letting him get on with it.
Give him time. ! hes enjoying himself

When I moved to a new place I kept my cats in for a week or two and allowed them out after that for short times till they got used to it all. I am sure your cat will settle down eventually you just need to keep showing the cat that you love him/her

you need to keep him indoors for at least 6 weeks so he can get used to his new home, smells, noises, and everyones attitude change.
after this period only let him out a few hours a day. he is still associating you old house with his territory and wants to know how to go home.
It is the number one reason a family cat will go missing.

Your cat is still in the process of adjustment. Things will be back to normal after few a days or weeks. Don't worry.

He's freaked out about being in a new area.

And the safest place for your cats is indoors, anyway.

When he is out, he is being a cat-person, doing catty things- when he is indoors, he is your kittencat and you are his parent. Its all part of the delight of living with cats!!

When he is outside he may be concentrating on hunting and being n hunter mode with a new backyard to discover. Give it time for him to be comfortable in the yard.

He just LOVES his new yard and doesn't want to come in from playing. Cats are like little kids.

HE IS STILL NOT USED TO THE NEW LOCATION YET. IS HE FIXED, CAUSE IF HE ISN'T THEN MAYBE HE HAS HIS EYE ON SOMETHING AND YOU ARE GETTING IN THE WAY OF HIS GIRL! BUT IF HE IS FIXED, THEN I REALLY DON'T KNOW. BUT ANY TIME CATS START ACTING UNLIKE THEMSELVES, THEY MAY BE SICK, SO YOU SHOULD GET HIM CHECKED FOR EVERYTHING AND YOU SHOHULDN'T LET THEM OUTSIDE! CATS ARE FOR THE INSIDE. HE'LL GET FLEAS.
