I've managed to win my mum over on this subject. But considering the colour red can mean anything from love and vitality to happiness and good luck. Why are so many people shocked when I say that is my wedding dress colour? Have you seen a red wedding dress?

I've never seen a red wedding dress in person but I have seen lots of pics that are beautiful. I think most people are opposed to anything that is not white/ivory because it is so non-tradtional and unconventional in their minds, even if it's customary elsewhere in the world, and they hate to embrace even the slightest bit of change.

Most women do not look good in any shade of white/ivory but they can't or won't step outside of the box and wear a color that actually flatters them, again because it's unconventional and they're afraid their family and friends will scorn them forever if they do.

Wear whatever makes you happy. Try not to listen to anyone else's comments. If someone doesn't like your choice, they can do it their own way when it's their turn. Alot of older women didn't get to choose anything they wanted because their own mother's planned every little thing so they're simply attempting to carry on that "tradition" even though the wedding day is supposed to be a reflection of the bride and groom, not the bride's mother. So she has no say in the matter.

For what it's worth, white dresses are really not that new anyway. Prior to Queen Victoria introducing them in the late 1800s as a symbold of wealth and status, not purity or virginity, brides everywhere wore their best dress which was something they already owned that was any color under the sun, usually jewel tones or similar.

As far as bridesmaid dresses go, black is an elegant choice. Women wear formal black dresses to other events and no one ever calls them morbid. They're always called elegant and classy. A wedding is basically a party on a much grander scale than most so there's no reason at all that a black dress would be macabre whereas it's perfectly acceptable and even expected at any other party.

I have never seen a wedding dress entriely red before.
But I have seen veils and dresses trimmed in red.
Most people automatically think that if they see color on a wedding dress that it must be the bride's second, third, etc. wedding.

I was looking at a dress that started pink and faded to ivory at the bottom. However it didn't fit right, so I didn't get it. I ended up getting an all red tiara because I didn't personally care for a dress trimmed in red.

It is your day though. Do whatever you want to do--reguardless of what others think. Good luck!

A lot of people are shocked about a red wedding dress because it isn't traditional.

And yes, the color red can symbolize vitality, happiness, and good luck...in Eastern cultures. If you are in a Western culture, the color red symbolizes danger, passion, and promiscuity, which are not qualities that people want to assign a blushing bride.

It's your wedding, and wear whatever you want, but just know that just about every guest will mumble about your color choice behind your back for quite a while. If that would bother you, then red might not be best for you.

I don't think a red wedding dress is either terrible or shocking. I've seen many brides in red and they all looked so fab and elegant. I've also seen brides in baby pink and blue and none of them looked ridiculous.
I will be wearing a classic dress for my wedding ( yep i'm a girl never mind the avatar) but that's exactly what i wanted.
Remember it's your dress and it's your wedding. I'm sure all those shocked people will change their mind when they see how beautiful you look in your wedding dress.

:)

I guess it's just that traditionally Christian brides wore white to emphasize their virginity, and therefore raise their value in their groom's eyes. Red is not a colour particularly associated with virginity but tempestuous passions, so a red wedding dress would not only imply that the bride was not a virgin, but that the groom was getting a short deal, and perhaps even lining himself up to be cuckolded - not an auspicious beginning for a marriage. In our modern times, less emphasis is placed on a woman's virginity when she goes to the altar, but such stressful times make some revert to these superstitions.

You have what colour you like - it is your wedding and as you say red has many symbolic meanings. My congratulations to you both, and best wishes for your marriage - may it be as passionate and rich as the colour.

I have seen red wedding dresses, and I have nothing against them.
Some of them can look very beautiful, and the ones you picked are very nice
However, I do have issues with muffin tops and exposed love handles, since they just look distasteful, but I don't think you'll have that problem at all with those dresses. As long as the bride is happy with the dress, nobody should care

I dont know what country you live in but it is customary to get married in red in China. It is meant to bring about good luck and fortune. I am sure you can find some wedding dress pictures on the net from China. One more thing, it really bothers me that people put so much effort towards an actual wedding and not the marriage. You get married in any color you want and be happy. Thats my view........Good Luck

There are cultures that feel that a red wedding dress is perfact and fitting as it is for good luck and happiness and white is for funerals...
Is you guy okay with the idea of you in a red dress? If so, it's your wedding and you only get married the first time once so do what is in your heart.

I am getting married this December and I am wearing a red wedding dress (Hollywood Dreams Scarlet), I tried on a lot of white or ivory dresses but none of them really did anything for me, I tried this one on and I knew I had to have it!

It's your wedding day and you should feel free to wear whatever you choose. Don't let anyone else pressure you into having what THEY want for you!!!

P.S. Have you considered putting your bridesmaids in ivory dresses? We got gorgeous tea length dresses with a lace overlay from Debenhams for £80 each, far less that any that we found in 'proper' bridesmaid collections!

All mums dream of a white wedding for their daughters but at the end of the day its your wedding you wear what you want. I dont think its shocking to wear a coloured wedding dress its just the tradition thing, like wanting your daughter to get married in a church.
