"What is evil but good tortured by its own hunger and thirst? Verily when good is hungry, it seeks food even in dark caves, and when it thirsts, it drinks even of dead waters." - Kahlil Gibran
For me this is about coming to understanding and forgiveness...moving forward in a just and caring way. Peace to you all.

Whoa, I have to admit I am really astonished at the heated response. I guess that I had hoped that, like me, others were being introspective...trying to learn what each of us needs to understand about Islamic radicalism...what desparation is feeding it and what our own responsibility is in that process. Sorry to offend but I challenge us all to think about how to fight against that sort of rage rather than fan the flames of hatred.

I don't believe you are right. Evil is an absolute. It has it's own entity and often feeds on good. Tortured good is a tested perception on good. In other words, will good become evil if tortured by evil. Where that could possibly relate to 911 is that could our good conceptional idea of government (US) be corrupted by the doings (torture) of evil (acts of terrorism)? I believe that that answer would be yes. Our government has yielded our liberties and disregarded it's word of law in order to usurp the public opinion and power for it's own individual purposes which to many are yet unknown.

That implies that there was some good in the deaths of thousands of innocent people, or good in the crippling wave that shocked our economy afterward. Or good in the heros who died and suffer from trying to recover any lives trapped in the rubble. Or good in the fatherless and motherless children left behind. Or good in a hateful terroist regieme that for one day tasted victory.
But most importantly, it implies that some how there is a place where good and evil are the same, and that in itself is the most disgusting thing i've ever considered.

This sounds like a justification of evil deeds more than anything, so I don't find it applicable to the anniversary of 9/11- which is about remembering and honoring heroes. To me, heroes are those who sacraficed their "hungers and thirsts" for others rather than seeking to quench their own in dark places.
Thanks for trying...better luck next time.

there are both good and evil in most everything depending upon ones personal point of view. you and i can look at the exact same thing and respond in two very different ways. what you may consider good i may not and what you consider evil i may not. the culture and society one grows up in has a lot to do with ones personal belief system and cultures along with society do vary in their laws, rules and mores.

No, I do not consider applicable on 9/11 or for any other date or reason. It characterizes evil as "good" merely corrupted and evildoers as searchers for good. It is not the case.

Forgiveness? Oh give me a break. We don't need to forgive we need to hunt Osama down and chop him in little pieces and feed him to pigs.

The first flaw I find is "What is evil but good." Evil is not good. Evil is evil and good is good. However, God can take an evil situation and use it for good, but still evil=evil.
