After collecting the blood sample from the patient using the vacutainer system, how is the needle removed from the tube holder?? Because soome of the labs reuse these tube holders

Is it done by hand or only by the shaps container...also, once the needle is released from the tube holder, can it be reused again???

When you say that the needle is snapped off, does it have to be done by the sharps container or is it done by hand?

Also, is the needle screwed to the tube holder or there is another way of connecting....

I have been a urse for 23 years and on my unit we as nurse draw blod. The systems used to obtain the blood are all thrown away. This includes the vacutainer.. There are vacutainers that are reusable but the needles are always disposed of and replaced with new "sterile ones" the needles are disposed of in a needle box. The needle box has ridges that release the needle without touching the vacutainer and the vacutainer remains reuse-able because when collecting blood the tube goes inside and the needle punctures and inserts into the tube, hence the vacutainer is reuse-able.

Vacutainer® Holder
The Vacutainer® holder is a plastic sleeve into which the phlebotomist screws the double pointed Vacutainer® needle. Holders are available in different colors and in two sizes, one for adults and one for pediatric use. Some Vacutainer® holders are single use with emphasis on safety. Here the needle is covered after use and the whole apparatus is disposed of. Most holders are used repeatedly and therefore must be disinfected in between uses.
The Vacutainer® System consists of a double-pointed needle, a plastic holder or adapter and a series of vacuum tubes with rubber stoppers of various colors. The colors indicate the type of additives (or no additves). Blood collection using the evacuated tube collection system produces the best blood samples for analysis by the laboratory. They also are safe and easy to use because the patient's blood flows directly into the appropriate test tube.
