Nope .. you were meant to lick it and then dip it in the sherbert .. not pour the whole tube in your mouth and see if you could hold it longer than your mates without choking / throwing up / spitting a cloud across the room :)

As a child I thought that was what the hole in the centre of the liqourice straw was for, to suck the sherbet.
Lucky for me I survived nearly choking to death and in future used the liquorice straw to just lick and dab. In point of fact I think the makers changed the fountain to a sherbet dab.

Yes it was, but it only worked very rarely. All too often either the sherbet or the liquorice was too damp.

Go for the Sherbert Dabs instead.

They were ace...the bee's knees....using the liquorice as a straw worked at first and then got bunged up....so it was tip the stuff down your throat time and see if you could do it without choking or foaming at the mouth!

Have tried the straw approach, has never worked. The liquorice thingy is made out of old shoe leather anyway I reckon. enzuigiriuk's comments made me laugh, that's just how it is........lol

the liquorice stick was meant to be a dipper. you licked it then dipped it in the kay-lie (northern word for sherbert). i always thought they were meant to look like one of those fireworks called fountains. wasnt they?
