The best prices on-line for homeschool materials can be found at Rainbow Resource. They are very helpful and friendly (if you need to call them).

Given your circumstances, I would check with the school district to see if they have anything they can give you for free. Districts usually change textbooks every one or two years and they have to get rid of the old materials.

YEAH for you! Why don't you check at the local libraries. Usually this time every year they recycle books. Many can be used for your after school program and the cost id CHEAP. Also, make contact with the Elementary School in your neighborhood. Speak to some of the teachers. Especially the Special Education ones . Scholastic offers lots of book and they are reasonably priced. Plus, you may be able to get some of the discontinued series from the school or even the ones that have been abused by former students . Good luck in your efforts.

I'm not meaning to discount any advice here, but I would not suggest old school text books. The reason being homeschool books are written expressly to teach at home. At this level, you wouldn't really need a text with a teacher's manual, but the teacher's manuals give tons of extra material, enrichment ideas, games, craft ideas, experiments, so on and so forth.
There are absolutely tons of options for you. Try googling "homeschool book reviews" to pull up sites that give info about different types of programs. you can also google "homeschool curriculum k-3, and pull up tons of sites. tops in my view: abeka, alpha omega, saxon, veritas press, beautiful feet, bob jones, easy grammar, a reason for handwriting, spelling, and science, backyard scientist. We have homeschool book stores in our area, plus I use bookstores like Mardel and Half Price books, too. Some are only available through dealers, but if you have homeschool bookstores in your area, go visit them, it can be a huge help to be able to actually hold the materials in your hands and look through them.
I used to babysit a child that was autistic. Very difficult work. Bless you for your interest in children.

A BEKA books. They're kind of expensive but they start at age 2 and go up to 12th grade. They're designed for home schooling OR Christian schools. They're made by Pensicola Christian College.

If you merely google or yahoo home schooling you should get about 100 places to get various courses.

If you are Catholic, Seton is one of the best and there are many other sourse following various religious view points that are good also.

And as stated I would run from actual public school texts, there is a reason you home school and it is to keep them from being mislead by alot of the incorrect info being taught there today.
