The Jews you describe sound like Orthodox Jews. These beliefs are outlined pretty well in the Old Testament. I'm really amazed that a culture can stick to these traditions for thousands of years! That is devotion.

The Wikipedia article gives a basic summary of their beliefs. I don't really understand the difference between "Orthodox Judaism" and "Judaism." I think Orthodox Jews are much stricter with foods and dress and look the way you describe, though. Think "middle-eastern Amish."

Above all, be respectful. I don't blame your curiosity at all! Get to know them; you'll learn a lot.

Good luck, and God bless!

That is how they identify themselves. And in a closed community they can control their lives and not be too adversely affected by life today.
They teach their children values that is being lost in the modern world.
I guess it's a choice they made. For us who do not totally understand it may seem wrong but remember for them it's right.

all this because they don't believe that Jesus Christ is their savior. And since they don't believe that Jesus is their savior, they are still waiting for their savior, therefore they must still live under the Law of the old testament. therefore their sins are not forgiven unless they sacrifice in the temple, but they have no temple, so their sins are not forgiven, and you wonder why they go around looking mad all the time? It is really quite sad.

You can ask one of them. I'm sure they would be glad to tell you.
Most of it just seems to be lifestyle to me.

We have Mennonites in our area, and the women wear long dresses and have long hair usually with a small hat on.

It's religion and culture, and it's not that hard to understand. Just so you know, a lot of the things you do seem weird to people that don't share your lifestyle. It's the way things are.

The kosher part is law for food, handling, preparation, etc.. I don't know the customs, but I'm sure it lines up with their law.
