This may result due to not checking of ur earlier mails... But I think I understand ur problem... Even when u have checked all ur mails it may still show some number... This is mainly due to the fact that when We read a particular mail and want to go back to the inbox, Most of us don't use either BACK TO MESSAGES OPTION or the INBOX OPTION... We simply use the back button of our browser... so yahoo mail does not MARK the mail as a read message and it still keeps counter that it is a new message... whereas some sites like GMAIL DONT HAVE THIS PROBLEM... Because as soon as u enter the mail it keeps counter that the mail has been read... But Yahoo doesn't follw this and keeps counter only when u properly exit the mail... I hope this is the most apt answer for ur question... Bye...

It appears you are referring to the display given in the window when you open your Mail Window. If that is so, the numbers shown are the new Mails you have rceived. It need not be in the Inbod. It can be in the bulk folder. The numbers shown are the
total mails you have received either in Inbox or Bulk Folder. Please check that

YOU HAVE NOT MENTIONED WHICH EMAIL PROVIDER U ARE USING MY UNDERSTANDING OF YOUR PROBLEM IS THAT YOU CLICK TO READ A NEW MAIL AND AFTER YOU HAVE FINISHED YOU DON'T CLICK ON INBOX INSTEAD YOU GO BACK THROUGH THE BACK KEY ON THE BROWSER IN SUCH A CASE THE EMAIL THAT YOU HAVE JUST READ STILL SHOWS AS NEW MAIL.
