Everyone has their favourite and thinks it's the best.
I have a Toshiba which is a good machine once you rid it of all the pre-installed software that makes it run like a lemon, not used their technical support so can't comment on that.
In the past I have used Dell which also have pre-installed garbage but less of it. Dell hardware repair service is good but you have to go through technical support first which is based in India.
Had a Samsung once - enough said.
Heard good things about Acer for value but not owned one so I can't comment on reliability.
Sony are very good but expensive.

Depends on what will u be using the laptop for gaming, business, personal. Alienware has some really fast laptops for high speed gaming. Plus some laptops are much heavier then others, like the new Dell xps m2010 its weighs in at 18.3 lbs, while the Hp Compaq nc6400 weighing in at 5.2 lbs. So go to a electronic store near u and check out what they have in stock and do your own comparison. By asking alot of questions it will help u in choosing the right type of laptop for u.

Apple, i say apple since they maintain themselves and they are very secure without enabling "FileVault" a encrypter for the Mac. The new apple laptops would not get damaged as easily when you drop it since it has a sensor that would stop the hardrive when dropped. In effect, protectin the laptop. Also, there have not been alot of viruses that can get through the Mac OS X System since it was developed so good. For example, the display computers in the apple stores do not have a virus program and none of them have gotten a virus ever since!!

It depends on what your needs are and how much you are willing to spend. Decide what you are going to use it for, and what features are a 'must have' then find something that fits that at a price you can afford. I personally have a toshiba satellite. I think it was a good value and purchased it at a Wal-Mart for just under 1k.
