The same reason that people answer a question by saying that they are annoyed that they have heard this question so many times before - and still not give the answer. Seems totally silly since it is so easy to give it a miss. Just the illogic of the masses. Same goes for everyday life - people complain about the problems involved in just about everything, but if things are running smoothly, they always manage to create chaos through bickering and copying the traits of those that they despise as obnoxious. Find out how to stop people being like this (even though they can spot it in others) and the world could be a truly wonderful place.
Some do it for no other reason than to annoy and frustrate.
I do like amusing answers though.

People answer questions for a host of different reasons, primarily because they enjoy communicating...the answer is often immaterial. The points are a bonus that lets them see how much they are communicator.
Although you could say 'pack em off to the chatrooms' that is a different style of communication, far more hectic, and confrontational; YahooAnswers is like gambling on the 2p pushing machines on brighton beach, chatrooms are Las Vegas.
9 times out of 10 the comments are harmless enough...wibble wibble.

attention, boredom... just to agree that it is a good question or say its a bad one. To be a smart ar*se is probably the biggest reason that people answer questions on here while they haven't a clue.

If you add a little pinch of salt, that should help you! I find that little extra salt flavour makes all the difference, hope that answers your question...

I'd give them all thumbs down if my browser would let me. If they get enough thumbs down do they loose a point? Similarly with thumbs up?

okay, besides the points, it really depends on the asker as well.
the asker could be asking non-sense questions.
