Traditionally it was associated with rural, poor, respectable ,working class people whose homes[cottages] were usually tied to their employment. Cottage pie was a way of using cheap nutritious food and left overs to make a tasty and sustaining meal.Often cottagers [cottars in Scotland] were provided with free potatoes which form the topping of cottage pie, by the farmers who employed them. It was a way of paying lower wages. A delicious dish using the cheapest of meat and freely available potatoes

yes, as you probably know a lot of people seem to think that cottage pie and shepherds pie are the same thing WELL THEY ARE NOT-cottage pie is a mixture of beef mince and various veg with a topping of mash, shepherds pie is the same but made with lamb mince. i believe cottage pie is named cos back in the 18th and 19th centuries when there was a lot of COTTAGE industry the poor folks would use meat scraps with loads of cheap veg to bolster it out to feed their large families

Because it is made with beef. Shepherds pie is made with lamb. Also, either can have cheese on top, or you can leave out the cheese. I prefer both with cheese!
