I wouldn't really call her a real proper friend, but more of a neighbour/acquaintance. I meet her quite often at the bus stop in the mornings and she usually has a compliment about my clothes. Lately, though, she keeps coming out with, "Where I work, I wouldn't be allowed to wear open toe shoes like that or summery tops like that and all that nonsense". I reply, "Well, I wouldn't like to work under such strict circumstances as yours not to wear them". She replied, "Well, when you have a mortgage, you have to keep at your job" - like the mortgage has been thrust upon her or something.
Am I reading too much into this or is she deliberately being funny with me? I know you'll probably say the former!!

I think she sounds like she is going through some crisis in her life and your the person she is using her 'stick to beat it with' problem, she didn't have to have a mortgage, that was her choice just like you have the choice to wear what you want to, if she is so unhappy in her job then why doesn't she get herself some confidence and look for something to make her smile in a morning instead of been so envious of someone like you who doesn't deserve her negativity.

no she is definately being funny. i dont know why, because there is nothing that you have done, but maybe things are going wrong in her life because when they are it is easy to blame it on somebody eles - and it seems that because you know her but still arn't good enough friends to get into a hard out argument you seem to fit the bill quite nicely. whatever the problem just remember the circumstances - shes an acquaintance, thats it. You only see her for a little bit of time in the morning, and thats it. Shes not very important to you so if you dont feel like talking to her - dont! dont worry or think about it too much its just putting more stress on yourself.

She may be a touch jealous...at the least, she's being pretty rude...behind all humor is a touch of truth (or at least, a window into the heart of who's talking). Next time she says something tell her that you're just thankful to be working, with so many homeless people and starving babies in the world. Nothing like citing some universal social ills to stop that nonsense.

My grandfather use to say, "you can tell someone to go to hell with a smile on your face, and they will be your friend". Meaning its not as much what is said, but how its said. If she is saying it rudely just ignore the comments. She sounds like someone who is bored in her life, and may be a bit jealous. It may also be that she is trying to make a friend, and is trying to start a conversation and be funny. You could say you know how she feels, "oh the pain of being an adult". You will be a better judge than I can be about it. If it really bothers you that much, find a different way to work.

She is being funny with you. Ignore her, she is jealous and don't talk to her anymore. Since you don't really know her anyway, I doubt not talking to her will make much impact on your life.
She is trying to say that that your dress sense makes you unprofessional, that you are much more frivalous with your money than she is and that she appreciates her job much more than you appreciate yours.
You wouldn't normally allow an almost stranger to judge you and criticise you in this way, so don't take it from her. Tell her to mind her own business.

She sounds like a petty witch. I say slap her in the face with an oily fish of some kind, stamp on her close-shoed foot, and then poke her in the eye. She won't mess with you again.

I would start going to a different bus stop, she sounds like a nasty jealous cow! Maybe she hates her job and her uniform and is just jealous that you get to wear what you want!!

Try going to the bus stop naked and see what she has to say then. Or even better - wear a giant chicken outfit and then say,"are you happy now"?

She is a nosey busy body. Just smile sweetly and say nothing.................eventually she will get the hint. She is one of those people who pass through your life because of circumstance who are truly meaningless.............don't give her or her comments another thought!
