My great-Grandmother, a greek lady, told me about terrible treatment that the turks performed on greeks a long time ago. Worse than the stories I had heard about Hitler.
Unfortunately, now that is what pops into my mind whenever someone mentions Turks.
I also know that the Turks that have moved into a sub-section of our city, are VERY nervous of police. I was told that it was because it was not too long ago that the militia could walk right into their homes and do whatever they felt like doing at the time.
After this, I really am not faced with the question.
Truly, if I was aked which culural background I would want to live next door to me, and the choices were Turks, Russians, Puerto-Ricans, African Americans, Polish, or German, Turks would be last, or second to last on my list because of the stories I have heard. Seems I am not the only one on here to say this, either.
Nothing personal towards you, just my gut feeling

Well i've been to Turkey and before i went for the first time i didn't think i'd like it but when i got there the people were soooooo friendly we had a gr8 time i fell in love with the place the food was nice the beaches were lovely and everyone was always so nice however i do think the lads need to learn more about honesty and not cheating on their g/friends or wives as they definitley did not know how to be faithful.

Hello Selin! I'm Kristin from US. I don't know much about Turkey at all. It's not a bad thing I just dont know. What I think about turks is you guys a people who have a heart to love, eyes to see beauty, ears to listen to loved ones, mouth to give support to people who need it, and arms to hug. Just like everyone else on this planet. Nice to meet you Selin. It doesn't really matter to me where you are from. You are Selin not Selin from turkey(that's just me) Have a good day sweety.

Hi Selina, I live in london and visited Turkey 2ce on University trips. The good things: friendly people, nice food, great weather. I visited Pergammon and Ephesus both of which have archeological significance.

Bad things: Turkey has a poor record of human rights - consider how they treat the Kurds, some parts of Turkey can be very dirty. At the times I visited your inflation was out of control.

Overall: Human rights must imporve, try not to make Turkey over touristy to keep its charm, get the Turkish currency uunder control and improve the living standards for all Turks and Kurds.

Hello Selin! Good to meet you!
Kemal Ataturk brought Turkiye into the modern world when he led the country. Hopefully your present leaders can keep a tight lid on Islamic extremists. I travel all over the world as part of my job, and would love to visit Turkey some day.
I'm an American.

The trouble is simply this: while Turkey may profess itself to be unabashedly secular, its population is predominantly Islamic. Two of the founding members of the EU, the proud French and the box-ticking Germans, believe that the EU represents more than just money; it is also about joint cultural traditions (pure tribalism, in other words). Nobody says this too loudly but the French gag on their camembert and the Germans on their bratwurst at the thought that the largest member of the EU could potentially be a state filled with, er, quasi-Arabs. "We are nothing like our neighbours to the east," cry the Turks. But their cries have fallen on deaf ears for a long time.

I don't think people think about Turkey. Which isn't a bad thing. I think Turkey is trying to be a part of the civilized world which they should be commended for.

I have only met one person from Turkey, she was very nice. But to me she seemed more American than anything, even though she wasn't born here.

hi
the last time a answered that question i got a really unfriendly reply, because i mentioned the situation with the kurdes and the armenians and the women-rights....
but i also think that turkish food is a delight and the turks are very welcoming people and all my turkish friends have always treated me in a very correct manner.
i would really love to travel the country some stage...
