Animation has had a long history in Europe, longer even than the live-action cinema, for it was in 1892, ten years prior to the Lumiere Brothers' films that the Frenchman, Emile Reynauld, displayed his hand drawn animation with his "Theatre Optique". Despite the proximity of Ireland to mainland Europe, animation was never embraced in any serious way by the indigenous population.

It has only been very recently, since the 1980s, that any sort of animation industry has been in existence. Traditionally, Irish artistic strengths have been literary rather than visual, and the people that have brought animation to Ireland are foreign, and not from Europe, but from America.

During the 1980s, Jimmy Murakami, Don Bluth and Fred Wolf all relocated their animation studios from America to Ireland. In most cases, the moves were the result of ongoing efforts to attract foreign investors and employers to Ireland. The I.D.A. (Industrial Development Authority) offered the companies tax incentives and promised to provide the necessary facilities to support their large studios. Naturally, job creation and employment is a priority in Ireland, a country battling against emigration, and amongst the facilities provided was the creation of a skilled workforce to fill the jobs in the studios.

The Dun Laoighre College of Art and Design developed an animation course designed to give school leavers vocational training. Although this had a rather humble beginning, Dun Laoighre is now ranked among the top animation schools in the world.
