Because they are grazers by nature, they are a type of carp and are like the goats of the water.
Their bellys are only the size of their eyes and you sould only feed them as much as they can eat in 5 min.
You dont need to feed them all the time, but you could put a mossy rock or one of these mineral stones in the water to keep them occupied between feeds.

That is just their nature. They will eat as much as you give them. You can kill fish by giving them too much food. Their stomach is only as big as their eyes, so remember that when you are tempted to over feed them. When they start pooping all the time, that is a sign that they might be eating too much. When their poops are a lot and will also put too much toxin in the tank, so you will have to continually be cleaning. It is best to not feed them any more than twice per day. I have different sizes and types, but they all get fed at the same time, once in the morning and once at night. Change the water, like just 20% maybe every week or so, because gold fish go more than most fish, they are just messier, so the cleaner the tank water the better. I love the gold fish and one is 4 yrs old, and others are just about that old too. They also like oranges, which is good for them. Always put a little bit of sea salt from the pet store in the water as that helps their immune system. They also like shrimp, also in the pet store, which is Brime Shrimp. It is frozen and you just break off a piece and put some water in a small cup with the shrimp, and they will love it and make them healthier. They need some meat with the flakes. So I just do this about once per week. They love frozen peas, just take the outside peeling off, and let your hand defrost them, and feed them one at a time. They will come up to your hand after awhile and eat from your hand. They love those peas, but be sure and take the outside shell off the pea. Only the soft part is what they eat. Just put one slice of the orange in there and only leave it no longer than an hour, so you do not have to feed as much when you feed this other food to them, like the peas ans such. Just balance it out, and do not feed but a couple of peas at a time.

Not only goldfish, but all fish cannot control their eating habits, hence we have to do it for them. The number one reason for fish deaths is over feeding. Excess food in the tank leads to some amount of food being uneaten. This food decays decreasing the oxygen in the tank, which adversely affects the fish.
Swimbladder problems are also caused due to overfeeding as the fish are not able to digest large quantities of food in their tiny bodies which leads to constipation.

Because goldfish like carp do not have well developed digestive organs. They do not absorb nutrients as well as other fish hence the need to eat constantly. As I'm sure you notice they poop incessantly because the food passes through their system so quickly. It is best not to overfeed because your water parameters can very easily degrade. Feed food developed specifically for goldfish as they are designed for the fish to easily assimilate.

They don't - and that is one of the largest misconceptions in Goldfish keeping.
This is just a very active forage fish, and you have to temper their feedings by realizing that overfeeding them is one of the main causes for disease and stress in Goldfish.

Your goldfish are bored and want to see you come and pay attention to them. Get them a bigger tank or change the one they have--add new plants, a scuba diver toy or other stimulation to their world. Even moving the tank to a new location could give them some new scenery outside the tank.
It is the fault of organized religion that we tend to think of our finned, furry, and feathered friends as stupid or not sentient. Fish are people, too!

I think it could be because fish has primitive brain. The lack of hypothalamus could be the reason that there is no feedback mechanism for the fish to know it is full. So they eat whenever the opportunity arises without feeling full.

Most fish are opportunistic feeders and will keep feeding continuously. In nature, goldfish (carp) graze continuously all day long.
It's natural.
