There was a recession in the early 80's which carried over from the Carter administration, but after the Reagan tax cuts the housing sector boomed. This boom was not as big as the one in the late 90's but it was still large. The Market dipped again in 87' when the market crashed but housing prices became steady. The real drastic changes in the housing market didn't occur till the 90's.

Interest rates on mortgages 18%. People weren't as concerned with getting their dream house as much as they were concerned with getting ANY house they could before they were locked out of the market. There were a lot of non-qualifying loan assumptions, which opened the door to a lot of creative financing opportunities.

I rented a 3 bedroom house behind and above a barber shop on Main St. for $300 a month...heat, water and electric included.
