Over 10 years ago. It began to get blatantly manipulated by the record companies meaning that records had tons of airplay before they were even released, with the sole aim of getting "straight in" at no.1 This could continue for weeks with new songs appearing and disappearing just as fast.

When P. Diddy and Jay-Z started making music - if you can call it that. Diddy ripped off The Police and created a smash hit which was an ode to a gangster and Jay-Z ripped off Little Orphan Annie - not a shred of originality between these two.

Think about 95/96.
If one of the retro chart played on many stations is for a year after that i have to switch over.
There are a few good acts today but they are few and far between.

I think it's because we don't see actual talent anymore, I admit there are a few good bands out there like Artic Monkeys but how many Pop idol X Factor winners have there been where after a year we don't see them anymore.We are constantly being told what we will listen to as opposed to what we like,thanks to the faceless corporate machines.It seems anyone can make it nowadays and God helps us.

the 80's woz the best years of music .. all the 80's music brought about all the music today like happy hardcore an other stuff ..and most of the 80s music is now being redone by 2000 groups an solo artists so as far as i think ....LONG LIVE THE 80S

when i was old enough to realise the charts we just a big load of record label advertising nonsense.

also the same time i was old enough that the higher a chart position didn't actually equal quality of music, in fact almost the direct opposite!

When MTV was aired as you can watch any music anytime, people like to watch the music they like so they are not bothered who is number 1 anymore, also the internet opened up the music industry so you can listen to any sort of music that takes your fancy..by the way WHO is number 1 anyway?

i dont know about other people but i allways listen to the top 40.
i really like to listen to it coz then i know what songs to put on my ipod. i think others started to lose intrest when ipods and downloads got popular so you can find out whats hot. lol but the top 40 should be in still.
