All depends what your interests are, what your budget is (time, and money).
There are many factors to consider. If you have more specifics I can shoot your some ideas though.

I don’t know what your background is and don’t mean to rain on any parades, but running your own business is not an easy thing. Before going in, I would recommend you sat down with a business advisor (you can find one in your local Business Link office) and see what it entails.
Some people get into their own businesses, thinking they could work whatever hours they desired, and have an easier life, when in fact, running your own business usually means putting in far more hours than you would in a regular office jobs, simply because there is so much to do in the first stages, and in order to keep costs you will find it helpful to do a lot on your own (providing you can).
Think about something that you would be passionate about, that would probably be the easiest business for you to get in to, you will be doing a lot of what you like doing anyway, and more often than not, you will get a better sense of satisfaction.
For a first time business, I would recommend to stay away from electronics and FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) retails. It’s a hard business to crack, requires an incredible amount of customer service and a good financial investment.
If you have a craft you enjoy, you could possibly start selling whatever it is you make; if you have a practical/useful professional aptitude/education (which is – of course – relevant) you can start a business based on the services you can offer, such as dog walking, house paining, child minding, paint stripping etc.

You don't start a business for the sake of starting a business. You start one that you have suitable knowledge and experience for. This is the best way to get success.
If you have worked in a shop, you could maybe open a shop, or a joiner could set up as a sole trader. If you enjoy making pottery, you could do that.
I started working in Hotels a long time ago. I am now a Hotel Consultant offering my expertise to other hoteliers, amongst other business ventures.
Consider what your experience, skills and interests give you expertise in, and read some books on Business. That shouyld get you started in thinking.

the best business idea I ever heard of was from some US guy called bill or something. The geek set up a software system for computers and I think he's doing quite well and still at it.
Perhaps try the same thing --if I knew for sure that his idea worked I'd give u his personal details.

If you are inexperienced in business, you need to start where the costs of entry are low so you can make some mistakes without crippling yourself financially. Maybe try selling something on eBay. Pick something you are knowledgable on and start slowly.
Good luck!
