Alphin is a European dialect and is the English equivalent of "alpine". Your name means 'mountains', or having to do with 'mountains'.

Or, it can be the French spelling of the name Alvin.

So, you can chose as you wish.

Cool, hunh?

You know I looked on the net, could not find anything spelled this way. And you say it is a NY name, well all I really could come up with was a alpin, and then a foreign language that seems to spell it the same way you do. Looked like German. I wish I could of helped, looks interesting...sorry.
