The people are the ones that invented ebay really - but ebay has gotten very greedy and many sellers feel betrayed. There is really no big competition out there for ebay (Amazon might be the biggest?)

..some say google should take them on and open another auction site. Who do you think would be up for the challenge?

I'm Canadian and there aren't that many auction site..I've seen ioffer but it is not that big right now. It would be nice if Google opened a competing site (major competetion is always good for prices and keeping a company in check)..they have the money behind them for the the ads (ebay's TV must cost a small fortune).

I would say the competition should be specialized sites that would allow people to sell to others who are knowledgeable in the particular type of product. I know I put up a lot of beautiful crystals, or rather had a third-party agent put them up for me, and only two sold. The problem is, people who buy crystals apparently don't use eBay much. So there may well be a specialized site for them that I don't know about. There may well be specialized sites for a lot of other things, too; you may want to go surfing for them. But eBay is the name everyone knows, and that's most of why they are so big.

opening a new site isn't the key. Consolidation is. Whether it is Google, Yahoo, Aol, or Microsoft. They should buy and integrate smaller sites which offer auction service "overstock, etc".

Amazon has there own problems and taking on eBay would be a bad move.

I think for Australians the answer is oztion.com.au. And I am a power seller on FEEBAY, and have been for 5 years!
Ebay being so greedy is driving their sellers away, and they are all moving to Oztion, an aussie site - try it - follow this link
