It stands for USSR in the Russian alphabet

People sometimes ask "What's CCCP mean?" as they see Russian paraphernalia with CCCP on and wonder what it stands for. Well I can tell you. Firstly I'd better explain that in Russian the alphabet is different and so as well as having some characters unfamiliar in the West, in the Cyrillic alphabet some of the characters look the same but are different. So, CCCP is in fact SSSR! So, CCCP translates as "Soyuz Sovetskikh Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik" or in some variations online I've seen it as (SSSR) = Soyuz Sovietskikh Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik!

CCCP could mean the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), as a Latin letter imitation of the Cyrillic Russian initialism СССР (equivalent to SSSR in Latin letters), which stands for Союз Советских Социалистических Республик (transliterated: Soyuz Sovyetskikh Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik).

or it could also mean:

The Club Cycliste Cycle Pop (CCCP), a road bike club located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
C.C.C.P., a German techno-house group.
The Combined Community Codec Pack, a filter pack developed to playback rich multimedia content with minimal trouble.
Carbonyl cyanide m-chlorophenylhydrazone, a highly toxic ionophore and decoupler of the respiratory chain.

Those are the cyrillic letters for SSSR, being the initials of the Russian words for USSR. The first word is Soyuz, as in the space-ship, meaning Union.
