Shadow. There is tons of stuff does not help. At least you gave some examples before you said that. I would edit that part of your answer if I were you. It takes down the value of your answer.

Here is some stuff that might interest you.

Books:
Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo
The Guns of August by Barbara Tuchman
Catch-22 by Joseph Heller
All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque
Dear America: Letters Home From Vietnam by Bernard Edelman
The Great Influenza: The Epic Story of the Deadliest Plague in History by John M Barry
Triangle: The Fire that Changed America by David Von Drehle
Flu: The Story of the Great Influenza Pandemic by Gina Kolata
The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan
The Way We Never Were by Stephanie Coontz

As for movies, I'd recommend Platoon, Full Metal Jacket and the original version of The Manchurian Candidate (the remake sucked). Also, Shackleton: The Greatest Survival Story of All Time (starring Kenneth Branagh).

Personally, I'm interested in the period from 1900-1920. It was a time of great turbulence and change, which makes it like today in a way.

anything by shakespeare. his writing is popular today because his work is timeless. his work covers all men, all times, from the highest of the high, to the lowest of the low.

as far as the manchurian candidate, definitely, the original version.
also, watch the movie, luther. it is mostly historically accurate.
