It shouldn't be hit or miss if you're giving it to him on a schedule. Give it everyday at the same time...preferably at home with his breakfast, that way it's already in his bloodstream by the time he gets to school. Make sure the dose is not interrupted by slack on your part in getting the prescription filled, or anything like that.
Also, you need to give it a few weeks before you judge the outcome. If your son has only been on it for less time than that, then it's too early to look at its effectiveness.
Also, talk to the pediatrician. He/she may need to increase the dosage. Go by your child's teacher. What does he/she say that makes you feel it's hit and miss? Take those observations to the pediatrician.

If you're looking for alternatives, your best bet is to take your child to a naturopath. Alternative and complimentary therapy practitioners treat the whole body, not just the symptoms. You can check with your local health food store to see if there is one in your area that they recommend, or you can check the web site below. They have graduates listed by state; you should be able to find one near you.

Homeopathy is another therapy that might produce results for you. Soul Doctor on Answers gives great recommendations. If you'd like to see a homeopath in person, I've included the web site below. This site also lists certified homeopaths by state.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Good Luck!

AD/HD is not what it used to be when I was a child. It is a nervous disorder. Talk to your doctor about other medications that are time released. It will keep him/her at a more even keel throughout the day, instead of spiking. I was on dexadrine in the 80's, but that caused spikes in my AD/HD. I forget what I was put on after that to keep me level throughout the day. DO NOT GO ON RITALIN. Very dangerous for your child.
