Hippo Vs Crocodile

2016-10-01 11:06:26 · answer #2 · answered by ? 4 · 0 0

There was a show on Animal Planet that addressed this. The hippo can open its mouth to 150 degrees, and has a great bite force. Thus when it decided to attack a Croc, it would kill it quickly. However, a Croc could only take smaller bites from a Hippo, and wouldn't be able to do major damage before the Hippos defended itself. The Hippo wins.
In real life, the Crocs attempt to go after very young Hippos, but the mothers are always keeping an eye out. Crocs will swim the other way when confronted by a live hippo.

It's important to remember that there are many species of crocodiles which range in size. The salt water crocodile of Australia is the largest of all extant reptiles, which can be over 17 feet long. Adult males can weigh over 3307 lbs (that's over a ton and a half!) Alas, hippos don't live in Australia, so I doubt these two dangerous animals would ever meet!

The large hippopotamus of Africa average about 11 feet long, 5 feet tall at the shoulder and weigh from 3,300 lbs to 7,000 lbs. What they lack in length, they make up for in sheer bulk. They weigh more than some cars do!

Since hippos reside in African rivers, it's likely the species of crocodile they come across will be Nile crocodiles. Adult males can weigh 2000 lbs, and be 16 feet in length, and rare elder adults can be up to 20 feet in length! However, it takes ten years for a Nile crocodile to reach adulthood, and the chances of them surviving that long are unfortunately slim, so most crocs would not be that large, and average about 6-8 feet in length.

The hippopotamus is quite a bit larger than crocodiles and can be far more aggressive. The advantage a croc has is speed and agility, but the hippo has a tough, thick hide, which can take beatings from other hippos and their 20-inch long tusks. The tusks rub against each other when the hippo closes its mouth, and never stop growing. This keeps them razor sharp and extra dangerous.

The crocodile's biting force is impressive, but their teeth are much shorter, and getting a good bite hold on a hippo would difficult, unless it went for the legs, but then it risks getting its head crushed.

In the real world though, crocs and hippos compete for river space, and the hippos usually win by bullying the crocs and scaring them away. They have actually been known to take food from crocodiles and eat it themselves (yes, hippos will eat meat if it's in front of them!). Crocodiles get their revenge however by preying on baby hippopotamus that stray from their herd.

crocodile vs hippo who will win?

A full grown Nile crocodile is no match for a full grown hippo. A full grown can bite a crocodile in half with massive jaws and canines. Now crocodile will prey on a calf, but not the adults. Even on documentaries you see on the Animal Planet, you see crocodiles keeping their distance from the hippos. And the crocodiles won't attack a calf, when its mother is around.

Well... That a 50 50 call there. Though I never heard of a crocodile going after a hippo. Doesn't mean it isn't possible. I guess to answer I would have to know how big each one was. Other wise I dont know what to tell you other then 50/50

Obviously the hippo. otherwise there would be a lot of very fat crocodiles and no hippos in Africa.
