I started with goldfish- there ugly and very dirty.
Get freshwater fish- I There is a broader variety but require a heater. Partial water change every 2 weeks, and skim the bottom once every 1 1/2 month. I have a 10 gallon tank. 2 tetras, one clown, 2 algae eaters a froggie and some other wired creature
I tried salt water and it takes a lot of adjustment, and is another world!! I would recommend starting with freshwater, then going to salt water if you interested...

I have a 70 gallon tank & we just love our fish.
My suggestion is to start ouy with a freshwater tank. There are all sort of fish, but here are some we enjoy.
1. Cichlids
2. Bettas
3. Grourami
4. Platy
5. Tetra
Get a book at your local Pet store & go on the Internet to get more info. I know some fish are not compatible so ask b4 you buy. When you do get your fish don't forget to get the algae fish. Ask the pet store person how many you'll need for thhe size of tank you have. Good luck

I've had the best luck with Columbian tetras. They were one of the first kinds of fish I got when I started out. I bought six of them 3 or so years ago and I've only lost one of them. They've survived all my beginner's mistakes, and algae bloom.. not neccesarily the fanciest guys, but very hardy.
My only advice is that if you have tetras in a community tank, try to stick to fish without long, flowy fins like Bettas and guppies, as they tend to be fin nippers. Dwarf gouramis and tetras go pretty well together in my experience. And I'd recommend getting some corydoras catfish. They are, IMO, the cutest catfish out there, and they help to keep the tank clean. Platies are good as well.

It depends what type of an aquarium you want. There is room temperature water, water heated by a thermostat, or salt water. If you want the easy way out and not a lot of maintenance, I would go for the room temperature water aquarium. There are certain types of goldfish, lionhead, swordfish, guppies, that are ideal for that temperature and do very well.

A siamese fighting fish a.k.a the Betta, or a goldfish. either one is a good fish for a beginner just keep the Betta in water that is between75 degrees F and 78 degrees F . and don't put 2 male bettas in the same tank, they will kill each other.

We purchased three goldfish and loved them. They lived for 3 years! We had them so long that they had names and were considered part of the family along with our cats and dogs. I have never had any luck with other kinds of fish. They always died on us. Good Luck! :)

male bettas. But only get one for your aquarium. They have a beautiful flare to their fins, and come in awesome colors. Plus, they don't need to be fed very much!
