Elephants CAN talk... to one another... just because they don't speak our language doesn't mean they don't have one of thier own, in time WE may be able to communicate with them using technology able to reproduce thier sounds.. so us talking to elephants may not be as far fetched as your question makes it seem......
Excerpt from Wikipedia... Communication
It has been discovered that elephants can communicate over long distances via low frequency infrasound, a sub-sonic rumbling which can travel through the ground farther than sound travels in the air. This can be felt by the sensitive skin of an elephant's feet, which pick up the resonant vibrations in much the same way as the flat skin on the head of a drum. We have only been able to discover this new aspect of elephant social communication thanks to breakthroughs in audio technology, which can pick up frequencies outside the range of the human ear. Pioneering research in elephant infrasound communication was done by Katy Payne of the Elephant Listening Project [6], and is detailed in her book Silent Thunder. Though this research is still in its infancy, it is helping to solve many prior mysteries such as how elephants can find distant potential mates, and how social groups are able to coordinate their movements over an extensive territory range.

Yes if we as humans could understand them. It would be interesting to actually hear what they were saying.. I think that would explain why they stomp their "trainers" and people who feed them. So we could actually now how bad they are treated in the zoo and park situations.. We think it is "cute" when they are paraded by us. But do not take into account the poking they have to go through and the tight situations they live under. With all those people staring at them.

It would be of great benefit to them. I can just see it now.
"I say hunter could you possibly not shoot us for our ivory, there's a good chap"
Or
"If you are going to shoot us we will stomp on you."

No because they would ask us why we kill them for their tusks and make them do stupid circus tricks and carry logs and ride them.
