Older game, I remember playing it back in the 80s. Dog could be a wolf.

the dog could be other things, also, depending on WHEN in time you were.

i think you're talking about an RPG, not a fighting game.

and the title i'm thinking, off SNES, is Secret of Evermore.

the first part of the game, it's a shaggy hound, and you are in a primitive setting, the first objective being to use alchemy.

Samurai Shodown had Galford and Poppy, however that game did not appear until 1993.

The Shinobi followup Shadow Dancer features a dog that fights alongside you. This was released in 1989.

Summoner had that but that's a 90s game I think. He gets a little dog in the game stays with him from that point on but it was a little terrier type dog. A monster kills it later in the game and man you are really motivated for revenge at that point. I thought it was such a cool dynamic to the game. At another point good spirits restore your dog to you. I really enjoyed that game.

Are you sure this is a fighting game (like Street Fighter 2, Soul Calibur, Virtua Fighter, etc.)? It sounds a lot like the Shinobi games on the Genesis, but those are platformers.
