Weather can be unpredictable, but it won't be very warm. Early mornings and evenings can be quite chilly or ever COLD!! Dressing in layers at this time of year is best. In the morning you have on a shirt and sweater or jacket, which can be removed if it gets warm.
I would recommend slacks or pants rather than dresses.
I certainly hope you will be doing some foliage tours. The leaves changing color is so beautiful. Where comfortable shoes. I would pack one nice "dress-up" outfit in case you are planning to visit any fancy places.
I am from Rhode Island, about 60 minutes away from Boston. Welcome and I hope you enjoy New England!!

It will be gorgeous in New England around that time of year! However, it is very hard to predict the weather, because most years in October it is warm during the day, and chilly at night. I would say the average temperature is about 60 during the day. However, there have been some years where October can be very warm, even going up to in the 70's! I would say pack mostly t-shirts, or long sleeve shirts, and bring a sweater or jacket you can layer it with. Enjoy your trip!

Let me be the first to welcome you to Boston!
The weather in October usually ranges from the low 70's(F) and 60's(F) in the day and cooler in the evening. I would pack a light jacket and sweater. I would also include some sort of rainjacket or poncho, just in case. It can also get a little cool and windy at times, especially in the shadow of some of our buildings. If you are walking, make sure to pack comfortable walking shoes or sneakers. The foliage should be ongoing depending on how early or late in the month you arrive. Today it's sunny and going to be about 70 degrees.
I hope you enjoy your visit.

The foliage should be lovely then. But the weather is unpredictable. It could be warm in the daytime and cold at night (especially at the end of October), or cool all day long. I'd suggest a light raincoat or rainjacket -- something you can put over a medium-weight jacket or sweater. I usually pack a microfiber jacket -- it's light, packs small, and never wrinkles.
The trick to handling Boston's weather is to be prepared with layers of clothes.

Layers, definitely. I would say a lightweight pant or skirt suit which will accomodate a sweater underneath and a raincoat on top. I don't know if you are given to high heels, but if you are going to Boston LEAVE THEM HOME! I've wrecked more than one expensive pair of shoes by snapping the heel clean off on a cobblestone street in the older parts of the city. I would find a pair of those little Sketchers sneakers, which come in plain black, plain brown, and some other, more fun colors, because they look nicer than Nikes and are just as comfortable. If you have those they are really all the shoes you need, or maybe you'd need one other pair, but that cuts down on the weight of your luggage significantly.

You won't need a heavy winter jacket but a light jacket and/or sweater should be fine. Something that you can also take off so maybe a jacket is easier than a sweater. It won't be hot but it also won't be cold enough to snow yet. October is actually a gorgeous month to visit Boston,
