I'm quite worried that I might be pregnant. It would be wonderful but I drank quite a bit of alcohol while celebrating a multitude of special events during the time I may have concieved. How long is the embryo protected from the alcohol? I know it takes a while to reach the uterus but I'm not sure how long it is in its own protective barrier.

The first two weeks after conception, before most women even know they are pregnant, are guilt-free. After implantation (two weeks after fertilisation) the placenta starts to form and that is when you have to be careful. That said, only North Americans are advised not to have any alcohol during pregnancy. In Europe most women continue to have one small glass of wine or beer per day with the evening meal.

That said, anyone who is actively ttc should be taking prenatal vitamins to prevent birth defects. No wine or beer is going to cause them, but a shortage of folic acid might.

A single celebration shouldn't hurt your baby this early on. But a baby is always subject to what ever you consume. YOU are it's own protective barrier. So whatever you ingest, your baby will ingest as well. It was previously thought that the placenta filtered out all sorts of stuff, but since then that theory has been disproven.
