I live in Canada. We have no death penalty, and very low rates of violence. Then again, we also have gun control, which keeps the murder rate down. In my opinion, it is illogical to punish those who murder by murdering them. I would not change this opinion, even if it was my own child murdered, because the death of the perpetrator would not bring my child back. Sitting and watching the death of the person who killed him would be morbid and sick, in my book. It just seems wrong, watching executions. It's just so Salem, you know?
Those who commit capital offenses are not deterred by the death penalty. It is not like a man walks into his bedroom, finds his wife in bed with another man, grabs his gun (which is there, of course) and then stops and says, "Oh, wait, this is a death penalty offense." Likewise, serial killers and such are compelled to do what they do, and they don't care what the penalty is.
I will tell you what I think capital punishment serves. It serves the human desire for revenge, the old eye-for-an-eye mentality, and it eliminates the chance of certain people killing again, either in prison or out of it should they escape. There have been too many times now when men on death row have been released on DNA evidence...that shows me that the system is not perfect and that in all likelihood, innocent men have been executed. That is not supposed to be acceptable.
Other than that, there is the issue of social class. There has never been a millionaire executed on death row. Put there and then released, yes. Commuted to life without parole, yes, but not executed. The poor get that because they can't afford the hot shot death penalty lawyers. So that's kind of like exterminating a certain class of person, in my opinion.
Anyway, you get the drift I'm sure. I have lots of reasons for not agreeing with capital punishment, I'm sure that others have lots of reasons for their positions too. I guess it's just a matter of personal beliefs.

I don't agree with the death penalty nor does Australia as a country and I don't believe that if we had capital punishment it would keep us more secure or decrease violence... in Australia.
If I were to live in the USA or another country where there is a much higher rate of violent crimes, weapons, murders etc. than here, perhaps my views would be different. I do not know for sure if the death penalty makes much difference in a place where violent crimes are so high as it seems to continue even with it in place, not being much of a deterrent but who knows... without it, it may be higher?

No Wouldn't make a difference if you didn't have the death penalty. You still would have violence and overcrowding of jails.
If the use of capital punishment in the form of the death penalty was used in all 50 states then YES it MIGHT control violence in society.

She should get the death penalty. Due to a traumatic brain injury i'm confined to this room.I watch the trial everyday it's been on. I certainly can't remember everything said. But I remember her demeanor.I can still look into some ones eyes and read they are lying. She has played the system and the emotions of the jury. She talked of how she can help other inmates. All she can do is teach deceit, and at that, she is a professor. I wish you all the luck in the world at becoming an attorney. I just hope you are on the prosecuting side. It is a defense attorney's job to defend pedophiles, rapist, and murderes .If this is the road you choose,i hope you fail miserably.

No I donot agree with it.In fact capital punishment is the ultimate punishment. It is extreme one.If criminal will know what will happen to him(specially death) by doing wrong deed ,he will not hesitate to do it.He will think OK let it happen and I will do whatever i want.
Other punishment like cutting limbs, hands, sexual organs etc. will definitely reduce crime. It will act as a horrible motivaton.
Penalty will increase with the type of crime.

I don't agree, because I kind of trust more other ways of securing crime rather than fear of potential criminals.

DEATH PENALTY OR LIFE IMPRISONMENT IS SOMETHING WE SHOULD LEAVE ASIDE AS OF NOW AND CONCENTRATE MORE UPON IMPROVING OUR LEGAL SYSTEM AND IN PREVENTING CORRUPTION WHICH OFTEN HELP THE CULPRITS GO SCOTT FREE..
