i have tried cold turkey but i can not live with myself then...and my nerves are bad...the best way i guess is to get the patches and try them...and if you just have to have a cigarette then take the patch off and smoke one...cutting down helps a lot at first...and just keep making it longer and longer between cigarettes...also make a rule in your house that there is only one place to smoke...i find this helps...i found this out when i babysit my sons kids and you can not smoke in the house...you do not always want to go outside....but it takes lots of will power and is easier said than done i think...i know we here about people that just lays them down...but not all of us are like that....but i wish you all the luck and hope you accomplish your goal...god only knows i need to because i have asthma and trouble breathing now...

It takes a rare breed to reduce smoking, and become a non-smoker. Tried it, and it didn't work. In fact, I ended up smoking more than ever.
The fact that you choose to reduce smoking, instead of stopping, says in a nutshell that you do not want to quit.
If you don't want to quit, chances are you won't be able to quit.
When I found out that I needed to have a surgery that would require a fews days in the hospital, and about a month to recover from; I decided to take the opportunity to quit at that time. It was almost like a blessing in disguise.
Tips that may help you deal with quitting are:
1) Chewing gum
2) Keeping a pen, or pencil, in your hand or mouth
3) Avoiding activities where you really enjoyed smoking (ie. avoid alcohol, certain foods, & being around smokers)
4) Keep yourself busy
Good luck, and stay strong!

you can't REDUCE smoking,, it is all or nothing! smoking builds up certain levels of tar, nicotine etc,, and reduces oxygen to the brain which creates the "high"! As long as you try to REDUCE your intake your are still feeding the levels in your body which remain pretty much the same,, unless you stop all together!! I was a four pack a day chain smoker until 2 1/2 years ago!! I haven't had a cig since I quit but still get "urges" and my body has not yet fully recovered!! Maybe in another 2 1/2 years I can say that I am finally a Non-smoker again!

well I recently quit after I had surgery after 3 days the nicoteen is out of your system so if you can make it that long you should be good.
I quit about 5 years ago using the patch and it was really easy. I know im a moron for starting again after being quit for so long. no more ever again though.
I suggest just taking 3 days and locking yourself in your house with a bottle of nytol. just keep yourself asleep for the 3 days and don't smoke no matter what!
good luck with it!
oh yeah reducing smoking never works just quit! I guarantee you will feel so much better about yourself once you do and physically you will feel better than you have in a long time.

Try the following:
1) drink more water;
2) if you feel like smoking, try delaying it;
3) take away everything that's associated with the cigarettes, like the ashtray, lighter or matches, and the cigarettes itself;
4) do more exercises. It's not very good to smoke after exercising;
5) read articles about how bad smoking is to our health and see thoroughly the pictures of lungs destroyed by smoking... get disgusted with the figures;
6) take deep breaths;
7) chew sugar-free candies or bubble gums.
It's rather impossible to stop smoking if you plan to do it gradually; but stopping immediately works much more effectively.
If I were you, I wouldn't stop. But if you really want to, then stop lighting one already!
Good luck.

As my doctor told me....
None of the quit smoking aids will work if you really aren't mentally serious about quitting
When you are ready....then almost any of them will work
The first 2 wks are the toughest...after that, it is much more unlearning the habits of smoking...
when the phone rings.
with your morning coffee
with an alcoholic drink
-for many , this is a particularly hard habit to break
on you way to the john
on a long, long , boring car ride
after a meal...
etc etc etc
the psychological habits are sometimes as hard to break as the physical addiction.....you have to unlearn your habits
As a practical technique, if you are trying to quit...and just not quite there yet....try switching brands...drastically...
for instance, if you are a non-menthol smoker....buy a strong menthol brand....and vice versa
[be advised though...some research would seem to indicate that menthol is as addictive if not more so than tobacco]
Good luck

I stopped smoking a long time ago & we wont allow smoking in the house. Our son smokes but he does not like his room to smell so even in winter he will go outside to smoke. Its a very unhealthy habit & after giving up I could exercise without getting short of breath & food taste a lot better

Motivate yourself: think about how much you stink to others around you, how you are harming their health as much as your own. Every time you feel like a cigarette, put the equivalent money into a jar, for a holiday or whatever..
And remember: "it is the cigarette that smokes, you are just the sucker on the other end!" think of all the taxes you are paying!
