They Donate Blood in America. I not remember how often a person can give Blood. But, there are places a person can give Plasma only, these places will pay for the plasma and replace the other stuff. By doing this people can give like 3-4 times a month. Most of the ones that do this are usually lower income people to make extra money.
I never have had to be given blood. But, I think the Hospitals take the Donated blood and sell it to those in need, but, I may be wrong, as I said I have never needed blood.

Legally no. They are not allowed to do that anymore. There are ways around it though. They give cards that can be used to buy stuff. The reason is they don;t want people to lie about their illnesses to get money. Red cross won;t provide compensation, but some of the other companies might indirectly. Mostly for blood products rather then blood itself. For manufacturing drugs. They might pay for blood use for manufacturing purposes . I think tehy can do it since it's not going to be for human usage. If your blood has unique properties, they pay good prices, but for a regular joe, I doubt you get much. Most of the time they get blood for manufacturing from expired blood from blood banks.

It's both. The American Bood bank has a place to go and donate, they also have drives a few times a year at the churches or you can go to what is called a plasma bank, where they take blood but only use the platlettes and they will pay you for this.
They take all blood types as long as you are healthy.
