I don't live in NY, but I do live in Southern California. Minimal would have to be 1600 a month (and that is take home money), to live (barely) ok as a single person in this area. Especially if you do not know anyone, do not have a roomate, or family to help with the expenses.

I don't have a good answer for you on the actual cost, I will leave that to others, but let me say that you have to very percise in your question about where you are talking about because, things like this vary alot. Across the US prices can be completely different, and even in the same area it is possible to be in one place and pay twice as much then a place close by. The main thing that will vary is the rent.

Extremely high. If you don't have unlimited funds, you would have a better lifestyle living in other cities or towns. New York City and Washington D.C. as well as the coastal towns and cities in California have an extremely high cost of living.

it really depends on where you plan on living and how many people you are supporting. California- most expensive, Arizona- least expensive...
For 1 person at least !!! 1,000
Off the subject: My gripe of the day:
Our government is more then happy to help loosers that don't work, unless ur disabled or a drug addict. But if you make minimum wage- forget it ,there is no help..

People, read the question. He said New York.

1500 a month will be getting you just enough to get by....
3000 a month will get you a decent place and living situation.
