I asked 2 tattoo artists. 10 yrs ago one told me women shouldnt get tatts when they are pregnant because of the body changes distorting it and not letting it heal properly.
Another tattoo artist told me in january.. that it was unsafe for pregnant women because it could put the fetus into shock.

Well, I've read in some studies that the inks used in tattoos have traces of metal in them, like mercury. I don't remember what else the study said was found in them, but lots of bad stuff that would make no one want a tattoo.

I never did get it--but that was for other reasons--I have 2 now.

I think tattooing is like hair dying and tanning beds, as far as pregnancy is concerned. They haven't done enough research to make a medical opinion, and what studies they have done have shown inconclusive results, so they can't make a medical standpoint on the subjects. They won't advocate it though, just b/c it 'sounds' bad for a doctor to tell you that it's really not going to hurt your child for you to dye your hair or get a tattoo while pregnant.
