Basically, the way I understand it, is that a picture/painting/visual image can mean so many things to so many people that it would take a thousand words (many) to explain the meaning of/describe it.

It is a saying/cliche up there with "if looks could kill," which proves that facial expression and imagination are far more descriptive and thought provoking than the written word!

The picture does nothing, it is only an image. However, it can spark imagination to the one who views it, possibly, into a thousand words. For example, I have a picture of my Grandmother. To most, looking at it means nothing, just a picture, but to me, it brings back happy memories, a thousand words or more of memories,

Becasue a picture is a visual and any one, irrespective of age, background, and experience, may see it differentlly in theri own eyes. Also, since interpretations can vary, so can varied meanings be put into a confined area as canvas.
Its all about personal thoughts and convivtions or interpretations.

From one picture you can get many interpretations due to the different ways of looking at something. We all have very vivid and different imaginations, and it is possible to express this through sight rather than words.
