I presume you have winXP, and a cd/dvd drive. And you have tried to play a dvd using windows media player, but could not.
Because Window media player does not have the MPEG-2 codec and a dvd decoder in it. Either you have to install another dvd player such as Intervideo home theatre, or power dvd etc. These softwares often are given away in a software cd that comes with the computer or the dvd drive. Once you install one of these, windows media player will play DVDs.

Or you can install one of the dvd decoder plugins to window media player given on microsoft's website below.

Asking the silly question first - presuming your laptop has a DVD player attached, you just need a good DVD player, which your laptop will have already installed if it does have a DVD already fitted and if you fitted it yourself, you should have been given the player to go with it.

If not check out some of the good free DVD players around -

If you have a laptop with a DVD-player, it should be easy using Media Player

If you don't have a laptop with a DVD-player, it's actually cheaper to buy a portable DVD-player nowadays, laptop drives being definitely more expensive than regular drives.

Other option is to buy an external DVD player - make it a burner then, since burners are hardly more expensive than players nowadays.

Buy one with a DVD player. Or buy a DVD player for your notebook. Most of them will come with software to play your DVDs.

If you have the DVD player, but not the software then try FusionSoft DVD Player: http://fusionsoft.multimania.com

A notebook computer's graphic card is usually not designed to take the input from a stand alone DVD player, so you need one that is part of the notebook computer.

as long as you have a dvd drive and some media playing software then you should be able to just put it in your drive and open it with your media software, tho you may need codecs, if so just do a search in google for dvd playback codecs, something like ffdshow might help

Use a free dvd player - AVS (no spyware!)
http://www.avsmedia.com/DVDPlayer/index.aspx
the controls are a little fiddly but you don't need to download any extra codecs in order to play your dvds and the player is very stable.
note: some free dvd players contain adware; please see here for details and other free players

Insert the DVD and press play.

You need a DVD player first.

All you need is a DVD drive and a program that can play DVD's.

I recommend VLC (VideoLAN Client) as a player.
